Just copy and pasting a SR1 mini impressions write up that i posted on the Australian Forum since a few people have asked questions about it here on BF.

"Gents, felt i better chuck together a small impressions on the new SR1, and i'll keep this one short since i tend to ramble on. First impressions are it's a dam solid, it feels the way my 4max feels but in a smaller package, although not small by any stretch. It's a 4inch blade, S35VN steel, dual oversized thumbstuds with a pyramid design so it's easy on your thumb. Fit and finish on my example was very good, centered, pretty even sharpening job from the factory and drops freely when actuating the lock bar. But hey lets not have rose colored glasses on, no 2 knives are made equal so i guess i got lucky with fit & finish, pretty much at the mercy of the guy sharpening on the day when it comes to edge bevels.

For a big knife it's actually not as heavy as i thought, it's got a good amount of heft but can still be carried in pocket. Pocket clip is stiff as heck and you definitely won't lose it accidentally, might need to give it a slight bend to make it perfect tho, i do this on most my Cold Steels as they come with pretty strong tension most times. Also the forward finger choil feels great to choke up on the knife as Lou7 mentioned already. Time for some pics and i'll carry on. PS. There are more than 10 pics in this post, but i did a little trickery to get it all in the same post, didn't want to split them between posts cos it breaks the continuity, and my OCD.

The lighting in my man cave is shocking, sorry if colors are a bit dull.

Very solid hardware on this thing, has nested steel liners along the Tri-ad lock and stop pin as well as very thick G-10 like most their models. I'm sure we all know how strong the Tri-ad lock it so i won't elaborate.

Really like the blade profile on this one, if anyone isn't aware this is basically a folding version of their famous SRK fixed blade.

What's a review without some side by side shots with some other well known blades.

Blade stock comparison, she sure has some serious meat at the spine...

But she just kept on asking...

I'm not going to wear rose colored glasses in this test, so i'll be honest, yeah it split the apple pretty smoothly but when it hits the thick spine it acts a bit like an axe forcing the apple apart like most beefy blades. The saber grind is thick behind the edge but it's not too shallow so it actually slices well for a big boy, and lets not forget this knife isn't pretending to be a replacement for your opinel, paramilitary or SAK blades. It's purpose built to be a solid camp style knife. But i'll say it did a lot better than i thought it would, after i re-profile it to 19 degrees per side i'm sure it'll also improve. Knives like this, the XM-18's/24's and a lot of ZT's will act very similar in these kinds of cuts.

Pretty impressed with how it shaves the apple once the apple is split in half since i don't have to push the whole spine through. For medium depth slicing it's pretty good. And surprisingly it doesn't feel too hard to peel an apple with it.

So, i'll leave it here then. Overall i think i love it, i've wanted a heavy duty un-coated blade with the Tri-ad lock to pair with my other rotations for a long time. I like to have one beefy knife and one slim slicer at all times. Looking forward to reporting on how Cold Steels S35VN heat treat holds up too. Thanks for looking."

Would you expand a little about the handle and how it feels in different grips, etc.? Judging from pictures only, it has always looked a little odd to me.

Sure no worries. The handle is actually quite comfortable despite looking a bit square-ish. It's definitely a larger handle with a bit of thickness and would accommodate even XL hands. I find my hand tends to rest under the front guard and i have some handle left below near the tail end of the knife. In reverse grip, since you usually put your thumb on the butt of the knife, there is then some room left then at the front near the forward guard. The handle could probably benefit from a bit of custom slimming, and i'm sure there will be some users who will modify it so. There's plenty of free sitting G-10 that could be sanded or dremel'd down to make it look/feel better. Overall tho, i've never felt it was awkward or annoying in any way.

Can't wait for your heat treatment long term impressions. Great review! I may buy this "little" beast as my heavy duty folder, tri-ad lock seems to be the nearest to a fixed blade a folding knife can be (except some frame locks with security pin).

Thanks for taking the time to share your photos and impression of this interesting knife. I noticed that other than the spine photo all others are of the right or pocket clip side of the knife. Could you post a picture or two of the left or non pocket clip side ? Thanks again.

Thanks for the review and great pics. Mine is on its way, after finally becoming available.
I really like my 4max, but that is a chore coat pocket knife for me. The SR1 is not a petite knife (got plenty of those), but maybe will allow more carry options?
One question - how does it cut compared to your Adamas? I sold mine some time ago and hoping the SR1 will better fill that niche.

Mine just shipped today. I have been waiting for this knife so I have my fingers crossed the fit & finish is as good as your example. Thanks for the detailed pics and your thoughts. Great info!

You won't be disappointed i'm sure. Actually lock tests have been done by Andrew Demko comparing the Triad to other knives that have locking pins, and overall the Triad still came out better in the end. The knife with the lock pin ended up sloppy as hell and the Tri-ad was in good working order after the torture was over, pretty impressive, your fingers will be nice and safe
Also I'll be sure to post about how the heat treat holds up. I'm going to be cutting some serious cardboard tonight since i'm in the middle of renovating and need to bin some boxes, so i'll be doing a direct comparison between Cold Steels new CTS-XHP and their new S35VN. I'll make a thread i can add to about the steel comparison. Hopefully i'll post it up tonight starting with the cardboard.

Sure no worries i'll take some new pictures for you tonight and post them of all sides and in various hand grips.

No worries at all. I also love the 4 max, but yes the SR1 does carry a little easier that's for sure. The SR1 and Adamas are quite similar in terms of overall size/weight, the SR1 is a bit bigger tho. As for cutting performance, i think the SR1 cuts better, even tho it's thick behind the edge like the Adamas it has a higher grind. After i re-profiled it to 21 degrees per side it made a massive improvement on cardboard and fruit.

Great review and really liked your pictures!

You're welcome and thanks.

Hope you get a good one too mate, post some pics and add to the thread when she arrives.

As requested, i hope these pics help with your handle grip and non pocket clip side picture requests. For reference my hands are medium sized, not small by any means but not freakishly big. If you need any other specific photos feel free to ask.

Look forward to your comparison of Cold Steel s S35VN and CTS XHP steels.
I like their XHP very much.
