Hey BF,

Ive been contacting custom sheath maker(s) and have been informed they often don't make sheaths for CS or need to change their sheath designs because Boltaron and other sheath materials tear up the CS handle material... anybody else heard of this? What design options did you guys do to get around this?

I wouldn't use those makers ! No properly made sheath should tear up a Kraton handle .

The factory sheaths that come with the SRK tear up the handles, are you saying Cold Steel doesn't make proper sheaths for their own knives?

Generally they don’t. They use a material called Securex that dulls the edge extremely quickly compared to alternative plastic sheaths. Kydex and concealex also dull edges but at no where near the rate of those securex sheaths.

Got pics ? I've not seen this .

As a matter of fact I do, this is a knife I sold a while ago that was lightly used with most of the wear being the sheath chewing up the rubber of the handle (since the tabs that secure the knife in the sheath rub across the handle every time it enters or leaves the sheath). I'm surprised anybody who's used a CS with a secure-ex sheath for any real stretch of time hasn't noticed their handle getting worn down.

This thread is about the handle material, not the edges.

Edit: I missed your post's point, never mind. I agree their sheaths leave a bit to be desired.

That's not happy news ^^^ !

My most used Kraton are on an old "Carbon V" CS SRK and a Recon Tanto , ~40 yrs old but they both came with nylon sheaths that don't cover the handle . I've beat the snot out them , even used them for throwing and clamped onto poles to make spears . The handles are a little worn but still fully functional .

I have a CS Kobun and the factory sheath also wears the edges of the rubber handle.
It drove me crazy, so I sanded the ridges inside of the sheath ( just a little) where it makes contact with the handle.

I arrived at the party a bit late but . . . YES.

Of coarse if one likes the handle material as much as I do one can make the sheath go by by permanently. You might want to go with a little more robust replacement knife than I did but . . .
Remove handle

Put handle on a folder.
Problem solved.
Could use a big O' Cold Steel folder . . . I'm just saying :D :p

PS: I wonder how the SRK would fair in their Peace Maker sheath. As I recall they make a larger Peace Maker than this one. That sheath seems to be kinder to my Pendleton Hunter 3V edge. Doesn't seem to be a prob with the handle material.

does anybody else have solution(s) or sheath design suggestions to prevent this from happening?

My SRK was made in the USA. No problems.

Mine had that sheath. I hated it. The strap easily slipped over the guard.

I put it in a third party Eagle Industries sheath for a while but found it too bulky. I finally just made my own leather high ride sheath. Now I'm happy with it.

Mine's just been sitting by my bed for about 24 years.

I don't even use the strap, I leave it unsnapped.

I've seen this problem with my SRK, which had an aftermarket sheath of some sort of molded plastic. It was tearing up the handle near the finger guard. I gave it away here on BF. I went leather after that as I was pretty sure any other similar rig would do the same.

Hmm, interesting. If this does start to happen, is it possible to get the grip replaced?
