Who would be interested in a srk reissued in satin aus8 with the new shortened ricasso, and without the hollow grind. And maybe an exposed tang at the pommel for hammering (Similar to the Steel Will Druid).

And perhaps a budget SRK in 1075 without the hollow grind.

I have a bowie bushman in sk5 that lost a huge chip on some seasoned wood while I was out bushwacking, but has otherwise held up to some serious batoning and general abuse.

Dan Maragni has an interesting article on Ontario's website regarding 1075 for hard use knives.

This has to be one of the most insane knife torture tests that I have ever seen. This guy even gives JoeX a run for his money. It’s old but still fun to watch and it’s the AUS8 model. I would love to see the SRK Compact in AUS8….now that would be awesome🙂

AUS8 takes a lot of derision, but I think it's an excellent choice for a hard use knife because it's very tough, very easy to sharpen, and usually not too expensive. It's resistance to corrosion isn't great for a stainless, but certainly better than SK-5 or 1075.

I actually like the very large diameter (shallow) hollow grind on the SRK, though.

Right on

The SRK is a living classic.

Aus8 steel has gone through some ridiculous torture tests on youtube, and most of the fails that I have witnessed have mostly been at the tip. Some members have suggested this is due to the recently in introduced (admittedly moderately) hollow grind.

Anyone got any comments regarding Mr Maragni's article about 1075?

I got the Sp10 in 1075 a while ago. Despite having a 90° angle at the guard rather than a smooth transition, this thing seems indestructable. No chipping or rolling on the edge either, I battoned and chopped the living hell out of it. Pure cutting performance wise, it can keep an edge long enough for the chopper that is is, but I would vote Ka-Bar's 1095cv a little higher.

For a knife in this dimensions, I take 1075 all day. Even a SRK version in 1075 would work great.

On another note, maybe make the SRK part of the Trailmaster/Recon Scout family. Just make it the mini RS, give it a steel guard instead of the kraton. Aus8, reinforced tip, steel guard. 60-70 bucks and cs would have a real winner. Different handle colors and coated/uncoated blade availlable. You can thank and pay me later🤣

I would prefer a Recon Scout in SK5 and under $80.

GSM: Just make things more affordable, CS is too posh now.

when was that? Just make me jealous.
I can't recall exactly, it was from Cutlery Shoppe years ago. I had convinced myself to only get the Trailmaster because I didn't "need" both, however my (gf at the time) decided I should have both so she(my now wife) secretly ordered the Recon Scout for me. Later that evening she walked into the bedroom with a printed invoice and handed it to me and said "you should have both". The Trailmaster came with a leather sheath and the Recon Scout has the SecureEx sheath.

Sorry to highjack the thread. I do wish they would reissue the AUS8 SRK and Recon Tanto, I would gladly purchase one of each. I love how cold steel does AUS8 , great edge holding and durability. I regret missing out on them when they were out and now they are way too expensive for the materials involved.

My cold steel bushman lost a fingernail size chip while bushwacking through some seasoned wood, and I heard a lot of reports of SRK tip failure (hollow grind sk5).

Are these the only models that seem to have QC issues?

I believe sk5 is roughly equivalent to 1080, and therefore not much different to 1075 if properly heat-treated.

bushman? that 20 bucks steel sheet bowie? I don't think it is a QC issue. Bowie, since day 1 it was designed, is a fighting stabbing tool.

I own SRK in SK5, and use it a cutting slicing tool as a knife is designed to be. Not ply bar. As of now, no tip failure happens to me.

Each knife is designed with secific purpose and strength, and mostly importantly: Market Positon (price). You get what you paid for.

Your wife is a keeper. Just like the Trailmaster & Recon Scout.
