I'm looking to get a CS SRK for field use untill I can get a Busse and find a good Kydex for it.

The SRK will be carried on Army Reserve and there is a good chance we'll end up overseas either in Bosnia or somewhere else. I need a good, strong, sharp knive for utility, survival and whatnot.

Does anyone have any substitutions in this price range? Must have Kydex sheath and thumb break for inverted carry.

Is this a high quality knife? I don't like the 440 stainless or I would get a SOG SEAL PUP. Other than the steel, I like that knife. Both fit my hand really well.

Thanks.

In my opinion the SRK is a good knife for what you will be doing.
I carried a Randall in Viet Nam along with a switchblade issued for flight crews.I also carried a Old Timer 5 inch liner lock.
Most of it is personal preference.

Good, stout knife for what you'll be doing. Also check out the new Camillus Becker Knife & Tool Companion, one tough knife for a little more money. (Maybe you've seen it mentioned over in the Camillus forum? If not, check it out.)

Riley,
It's an ok blade, I've got a couple of 'em. The knife is a good example of a sharpened pry-bar.

In todays Army, you don't want to be advertising that you have it....in other word, keep the thing out of sight or you wont have it for long.

For your most likely needs: 1) an Extra Large Cold Steel Tanto Voyager with a 50/50 edge. 2)a Benchmade Pinicle(sp?)with a plain edge. 3) a Letherman Wave. 4) A SAK for use when others are around.
I got through 'Nam with a whole lot less. None of the above cost a lot but gives real cutting ability that the SRK doesn't really dilever cuz of the thick edge. Even in todays Army numbers 3&4 are acceptable, while, being folders 1&2 are easier to keep out of sight.

I had an SRK on my LBE from Korea to Ft. Bragg - and on every deployment during that time. It's a great sharpened prybar of a knife that will handle most if not all of the abuse you'll heap on it, and best of all it won't break your wallet. With it's Concealex sheath (a huge improvement over the Cordura / Cardboard it used to have) it's pretty much the best offering in it's price range. For about $10-15 more you can upgrade to a Becker Campanion, but you can pretty much get an SRK in any store by the base - it's not hard to find.

Is it a great chopper? No. Can you clear light brush with it and make aiming stakes? Yes. Is it's handle super tough, and the most comfortable out there? No, but it's more than adequete, works in the forward and reverse grip, and will work well with or without gloves.

If they had one with a G10 handle it'd be a hard combination to beat.

I'll second the comments about having a multitool on you at all times - and make sure you dummy cord it to you, or it will wind up wandering off. I carried a Gerber Multiplier, but that was before there was a WAVE, which is probably the best choice out there these days. A pocketknife is up to you, but those MRE's don't open themselves, along with other daily concerns. Get the feel of your commander, PL and NCO's first because you never know what will get you in trouble.

A Benchmade Ascent, Spyderco Delica / Endura, or Cold Steel Voyager (medium or large, XL is asking for trouble) is a good choice, and again, won't bust your wallet.

The SRK is a good knife but the Fallkniven A-1 and the BK&T Campanion are better.

I'll add another two thumbs up for the SRK. Sharpened pry bar is as good a description as any. I can't kill mine and I abuse it on a regular basis. I think the Concealex sheath is a vast improvement and rounds out the package nicely. You can't go wrong with one.

The BKT Companion is getting a lot of mentions, but I've not seen a single performance review on one. Have I missed it?

The SRK is very solid and well-proven, especially for a knife in its price range. It's extremely strong and tough, the handle is comfortable. It cuts, but the thick edge isn't the greatest cutter in the world. If you're happy with the thick edge it comes with, then great. Otherwise, spend a few minutes with an x-coarse hone or even a file, and thin out the edges a bit. Once that is done you have a pretty killer knife for the price.

Thanks to all that replied. I always carry a Leaterman Super Tool and for now I have a CQC-7 knife by BM.

Where can I see and get a Fallkniven with black blade and kydex sheath?

Thanks again.

I don't like the BKT Companion much. I'm allowed to carry most knives under 7" in my unit.

So, now we have Fallkniven A1. Any others? Black blade, kydex or concealex sheath. Thanks again.
