I am not sure I spelled nimravis right?

Anyway, I am looking for A camp knife. I have it narrowed down between these two..I think. Which one do you reccomend? Also if there is A similiar piece in this price range you like better feel free to let me know. Thank you all in advance!

For camp knife role I would recommend to choose between:
  • BENCHMADE Nimravus if you like thinner blade and easier to resharpen conventional V-grind edge. ATS-34 version is more corrosion resistant, M2 version has more impact resistant edge.
  • Fallkniven S1 if you like thicker blade and a bit heavier to sharpen but much stronger convex edge. Recently it is available with black teflon coated blade also.
If the smaller knife with blade length 3,5-4" is enough for you or if you are limited in weight conditions - think about BENCHMADE Nimravus Cub, SPYDERCO Bill Moran Featherweight and Fallkniven A1.

Go with the SRK.The Nimrivus is OK but you can get a SRK for about $50.00 cheaper. For a camp knife the SRK works well for me.

have a"knife"day

I also would like to throw the SOG Government into the mix. Anyone have any experience with it?

I'd also vote for the SRK. This is one tough bugger that doesn't know when to quit.

Big bang for the bucks.

I just bought a SRK. Great knife and it's not very expensive. I'm fairly confident that it could withstand any abuse I put it to. It also came razor sharp out of the box. I like the sheath too. I have never handled an BM nimravus but alot of people like them, although they are more expensive than the SRK. The nimravus has a 4.5" blade while the SRK has a 6" blade. The blade on the SRK is 3/16 " thick, while the nimravus is much thinner at .115". What do you use your camp knives for? Food prep, cutting ropes, gutting fish or game? At least if you get the SRK you won't feel as bad about putting it to hard use as the more expensive nimravus. Good luck and let us know which knife you choose!

Neither. Get a Cold Steel Bush Ranger. My reasoning is that a camp knife should be able to do all task relatively well. The blade design of the Bush Ranger is good for slicing food, chopping light wood, shaving down kindling, and skinning animals and puncturing cans (if need be). The steel is thicker than that of the Nimravus, and the kniife is larger than both of your initial choices, but it carries well and has a good leather sheath. The handle is also a much better shape than that of most other Cold Steel fixed blades. Carbon V is a good steel, and the knife can be had for 50 bucks at botach.com.

Geeze Raggio. What is it with you and that Cold Steel stuff?

Nah, nothing wrong with it... Cold Steel is OK in my book. To each his own. You aren't Lynn T. in disguise are you?

Just seems that whenever I read something from you, it is about a CS knife.

Long ago you told me to check out the Cold Steel Voyagers. Well, I did, but I wasn't terribly impressed by them.

Well, speaking for myself, I'm not a great fan of Cold Steel.
BUT the shining exception is the SRK. It is one of my favourite knives. It is really sharp and tough, it can take abuse and keep in one piece, and the price is right. Can't go wrong with it.

Hey Guys...

I'd also like to throwin the SI as the knife of choice...

Although I don't have an SRK I do have the Nimravus,, it's a pretty nice knife,, but made more for fighting I think them general camp service.
The SI is idea for camp use Big enough to do some fairly heavy work but still small enough to be useful for finer detailed stuff..

Truthfully lately I've been getting a lot of use of of my FI and WM over the other two..

Just my opinion though...

The SRK is a good -- make that excellent -- all-round knife, at a good price. You'd have to work at it to break it. Carbon V is a terrific steel. That said, I just ordered a Fallkniven F1... of course, just a couple of days before I discovered Fallkniven's new hunting knife, designated H1... which looks like sort of a puukko on steroids. VG-10 steel is highly rated, by all accounts. Anyway, I've got a couple of Voyagers and have no complaints at all. Good tough working knifes.

The Fallkniven A-1 is better than the SRK or Nimravus. The BK&T Campanion is excellent also. For your average camp it's hard to beat the Cold Steel Bushman. It can be had at various sales for $10-$20

Try a CS Bush Ranger. I've seen this baby in action on a camping trip, and it passed with flying colors. It costs a little more than the SRK, but it is worth the extra dollars. Don't get me wrong the SRK is a superb knife.

Checkout jungletraining.com..They did a evaluation on the SRK. It's worth the reading.

I can't really give you my thoughts on the Nimravus for I have yet to own one..let alone hold one. But from what I hear it is a well made knife made by people who know the meaning of quality, performance, and durability..

Hi
wink.gif

I have them both for a while, used both of them quite heavily.
Nimravus does hold an edge better but CRK is more versatile. The blade geometry is different on thos knives, CRK has stroger tip & if necessary can be used for chopping too. Nimravus is too small, light & M2 steel is not the best choice for that sort of task anyways. In short I am using my Nimravus for cutting & slicing only.

Well folks, I thought it out. I checked out all the suggestions. The one I am getting is not even one that I was initially considering..The Cold Steel Bushranger. I did A search in the reviews section and did not read one bad thing about it. So that is my new all purpose outdoors knife. Thank you all for the suggestions....BTW...My second choice would have been the SRK.

bteel,
go to General/ Test and Reviews/ SOG or Cold Steel to see my opinion of SOG Government model. Just keep in mind that opinions are like backsides, everyone has one.
Mine says go with Cold Steel. Just because it doesn't cost as much, doesn't meen it's not a great knife. This was a hard lesson learned for me.

If you are interested in a good camp knife, look at one of Chris Reeve's one piece knives. They are really great. They are however, quite a bit more money.

I have two Nimravis (and like them a great deal) but it doesn't seem like it would make a especially good camp knife.
