cold steel t-lite question

i have two cold steel ti-lites. they're my favorite knives within my budget. however, i have a huge problem. the little wing things that stick out (sorry, don't know what they're called) are extremely uncomfortable when i carry the knife. i have to find inventive ways to fit the knives in or under my clothes because i wear tighter clothes than men, and they always rub up against my skin in a way that's much more painful than the normal stuff you get used to after awhile.
what is the purpose of these wings and are they really necessary? is there a way i could get rid of them? thank you!

Welcome to bladeforums!

Those wings are a type of "wave" to snag on clothing when you draw the knife making it open in one smooth motion.

Just have someone grind them off. If you live around here, stop by it will just take a few moments to make them disapear..:D

You might want to just round over the edges a bit, as the "wings" form the guard...don't want your fingers sliding onto the blade as you stab something...

i just moved to a small town in Virginia and i know there isn't a knife shop around. what kind of tool would i use to grind the wings to just round them out a little? is it very difficult and would it better if i just tried to find someone to do it?

okae i'm sorry if this sounds stupid. but sandpaper really works on the metal?

thank you guys so much for your help so far!

Yup, sandpaper works great on metal. Many of the folks in here use sandpaper to hand-finish the knives they make.

IMHO you'll probably find that the black wet-dry sandpaper works better than the brown stuff. It should be available near the painting supplies at the hardware store.
