Hey guys. I was curious if any of you know about Cold Steel history regarding the Trail Master series.

I just ordered one that has a leather sheath, black coating, and sk-5 steel.

Is it a good one or are the older ones better?

There is nothing wrong with the black sk-5, the old carbon v is better but sk-5 is a seriously tough and easy to sharpen carbon steel. Lots of sawblades etc have been made from it forever.
One of my fav bushcrasher's is the sk-5 that I reprofiled and convexed, almost has the black coating worn off on 50% on 4 yrs of hard use. Can't bring myself to use the carbon v in the vault.
Lots of guys don't like Lynn but the trailmaster is a seriously underated bowie for the price.
Get it because the shiny taiwan models will be out of the same steel but 40% plus more, I bought the last display model at warriors and wonders because where are you getting that much knife for 100$ or less.

From what I have read SK-5 is not that far behind Carbon V. I just got the new CS Trail Master SK-5 Martempered Taiwan Model and it's very strong and chops like a pro. IMO I really cant tell any diffrence between the two steels.

I got it on ebay brand new. Some guy had it as old stock. I paid just over 100 for it. I couldnt find it any cheaper online. It should get to me some time this week.

I am really looking to turn it into a hard user knife.

It sounds the like the one you have just ordered was made in China the new ones that are satin finished are made in Taiwan and Carbon V was made in USA.

Honestly I dont think there is much of a diffrence between the China and Taiwan Model besides price and the coating. I have heard nothing but good reviews about the China made model. I had the Recon Scout that was made in China and it was a great knife!

Thanks, I wasnt sure if there was a possibility it was made in the U.S. so I had been kind of holding on to that possibility. I really dont care as long as it is going to do work. At least I know the guys in the U.S. profited from it.

P.S. What do people have against L.T.? Does it have anything to do with his meat slashing vidoes?

No problem, it will do just fine as a hard use knife just keep the edge clean with some gun oil when your done using it to prevent rust and you should have no problems. P.S. I love my Trail Master and congrats!

I think the main reason L.T. is not highly regarded is because of his style of marketing is over the top but IMO he has some great knives and the T.M. is one of them.

How much time do you have?;):D

lol. Just give me an outline.:D

Its centered around his videos right? Dressing meat up with blue jeans and leather jackets and slashing it -with no proof of eating it afterword. It would be cool if every video ended with them having a feast of all the meat they cut up.

I picked up two of the Chinese made SK-5 models at Smoky Mountain Knifeworks when they had them on clearance for 50 bucks each. I just bought a house that has been empty for over a year. The yard has been mowed but all the shrubs and bushes have been allowed to go crazy. One of my Trail Masters might see some fairly serious yard duty soon.

The whole L.T. issue is a dead horse....please quit beating it! :)

Thanks 3Guardsmen, Lots and lots of reading.

Definatley his defense fantasy videos. I like the videos, I just think he would be way cooler if all the guys from cold steel left a 15 minute ending section where they all feast on the meat they cut up. A genuine Cold Steel BBQ. That could be a video all in itself.
