Do ya love 'em !?
Sunday after watching my Steelers go into another mediocre victory I decided to shed myself of a few bucks that had sitting far too long in my wallet so I ambled on down to one of the local gun/sporting goods stores that happens to have a nice selection of cutlery , mostly looking for that elusive single blade slipjoint that would sweep me offa my feet , to no avail. The Case didnt offer anything I wanted and was more than I was willing to pay , for that money I can exactly what I want in a GEC , just not locally.
Then I happened into their 'tactical knife' area and noticed that they carry the BK9 Combat Bowie !!! I've been wanting one of these for a while now.. maybe next payday
a few knives over a Tanto caught my eye , it was the Cold Steel Tanto Lite. Never seen one in person so I asked to see it and $26 later I was heading out the door with that and one of these neat little Ka-Bar JAB knives for another $10.
after I got home the little woman called and said she wont be home for another four hours or so. Plenty of time to play with my new goodies. After some fiddlin' I have come to the conclusion that this new knife of mine ( Tanto Lite) is one hell of a sweet deal ! My first foray into Krupp steel , I was not sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised after several minutes chopping at at a well seasoned pine 2x4 that this steel is not half bad at all. first off let me say that this knife was literally shaving sharp out of the box , as my arm can attest to in several areas.. , the edge just needed a little touch up and it was back to the same level as it was when I took it out of the box , impressive for $26 !
I feel bad for no pics but I'm killin' time before I go to my all night out of town install.
another pleasing aspect is that the finish on this knife is lovely , pretty satiny horizontal finish that I was a little apprehensive of messing up but hey, I bought this knife to enjoy , not to sit on the shelf. The handle was very , very grippy , to the point that any prolonged use is going to guarantee some blisters , so I fixed that with some 80 grit , now the handle is nice and smooth but still grippy enough. The blade is thin enough for excellent slicing but not so much that it feels overly flimsy.
I've read some complaints about the sheath , IMO it does what a sheath is supposed to do , actually the fit is prefect for the knife , it is just plain jane with no bells and whistles but what do you expect for that money ??
The next day after work I just had to go back and get the other Lite model , the Outdoorsman. now both of these models are cheaper versions of higher priced and thus finer made cold Steel knives , as a matter of fact I've had the regular Outdoorsman on my radar for some time but just have too many others I want that are a better value , to me. So the Lite version satisfies my want , same shape overall , just the Krupp steel and cheaper sheath, and handle.
I have not had a chance to put the Outdoorsman thru it's paces but I'm sure it will pass muster just fine. The Outdoorsman is more of a traditional Japanese tanto , either way both knives have a wonderful blade finish and were razor sharp out of the box, excellent values for the $$!
Anyone else own one of either of these ? what do you think about them ? For those who do not you might want to give them a look. both are made in Taiwan of course ,that aside they are both good quality knives that will easily stand up to light and medium use. I wouldn't go stabbing cars doors or trying to baton the evening firewood but otherwise either one would make a fine addition to your collection.
Thanks for lookin'
