Hi, my friend and I recently bought ourselves a Cold Steel Tanto Lite and Outdoorsman Lite respectively and both agreed that we weren't keen on the shiny finish on the 4116 blades. I looked around online for a fix but no-one seemed to be doing anything so I risked it and gave both an acid wash, amongst other treatments. I heard that this steel wouldn't react well but it actually turned out better than I expected. Here are some pics

That turned out very good!

In future you can also use the purple scotch brite pad making strokes in one direction (handle to tip or spine to edge) to give them a satin finish instead.

I think the acid wash turned out nice!

That turned out excellent!!!

What type acid did you use?
I’ve etched with ferric chloride but never tried it on bare steel.

Thanks. I alternated between ferric chloride and black patina compound for stained glass windows, also wet and dry sandpaper. Probably a dangerous combination but hey it looks pretty good :)
