i love tanto blades and ive been looking for a good neck knife, ive narrowed it down to either the cold steel the spike tanto or their mini tac tanto. id like the knife to be a good thrower as well, i know that most any knife can be thrown.. but some preform better than others. do either one of these throw well? are there any issues about either i should know about? id be mainly using the knife as self defense, anything else that requires a knife i'll use my gerber icon tanto. thanks in advance :)

Neither of them is meant to be thrown at all, but if you must, the spike will throw better. It will also be better as a defense knife, BUT, planning on using a neck knife for self defense is generally NOT recommended.

Spike will be a better thrower. But the minitac is a better user.

why is using a neck knife for defense not recommended?

As as forum member HoosierQ once posted:
"To use a knife as a self defense tool against a determined attacker you need a tremendous amount of training...and then practice. Yes, the same is true for firearms but given the nature of the two different tools, the nature of training is very different too. In other words, there's a reason why people gave up edged weapons as quickly as they could manage to do so in favor of firearms. In a knife fight, say all the experts, you will be injured badly even if you "win"...you'll be cut up badly even if you make your attacker retreat. Such wounds may be life threatening. With a knife, you have no capability to stand off from the attacker...to be close enough to deploy a knife, he will be close enough to cut you. And of course if he has a gun...or a club/crowbar etc, he has totally got the advantage over you. It's just not like West Side story or Crocodile Dundee."

In other words, a neck knife has no reach, to use it as a weapon the potential attacker will have to be in very close, increasing their chances of getting control of your weapon(and potentially using it against you), and if they have a weapon even as big as a hammer, they can injure you without you being close enough to injure them at all.

its alot better to have a knife and not need it, than to need a knife and not have it.. id rather not have to use a weapon, but there are times where if you dont have a means of self defense than these "possibly life threatening injuries" you get with having a knife, automatically become a death sentence if you dont have one.

That argument was already countered in Xiaolong's link. If you think you need something for self defense, carry a gun, carry a baton, or if both of those options are not available and you have to carry a knife, carry a full sized fixed blade, NOT a neck knife.

Well, if you can't carry one, that rules it out. But if you were seriously wanting something to defend yourself with, a gun will generally be a better choice than a knife.
