I asked this question in the throwing forum but didn't get any responses so i thought i'd try here.

Is the Cold Steel 80TFT True Flight Thrower worth the $18.00? I was wanting a throwing knife to mess around with and didn't want some cheap knife that wouldn't take some throws. If any of you have this knife or know anything about it, the information would be helpful. TIA.

Past posts have described brittle failures with the Cold Steel throwers. You can practice on any cheap knife of suitable weight, just hunt around at a junk store .

torment,
I saw your thread on the knife thrower forum, but haven't had a chance to reply. Like Cliff mentioned the Cold Steel throwers are rather brittle (I think the rc is 60-62?) especially if thrown at "hard" targets. I was going to recommend you use the search function on the knife thrower forum (just search for Cold Steel), and see what others have said about the CS thrower (many are favorable). But for a little bit more money, you could buy a decent "thrower" which will last you longer and take the abuse.

For a cheap alternative you can take large nails, cut off the end and sharpen them. These work better than many commercial throwing knives.

I've used Gil Hibben's throwers for years now. They're very reasonable priced (made by United Cutlery), and I prefer his original models. Especially the 8 & 1/2" (Thrower II) or the 10" (Thrower III). The 8 1/2" runs about $18.00

I'm not a big fan of his newer designs, however. Not enough meat in the knife. As for wear, the 8" and 10" hold up really well. The smaller 6 1/2" tends to bend at the tip if you get many horizontal strikes. Steel is 420 J stainless, and balance is excellent. Also, the designe allows it to be used for other purposes and carried legally in most places. I don't have any use for carrying one, but if you were going someplace to throw or for camping, it is perfectly legal to tag along (Texas includes throwing knives in their list of illegals). Plus, if your adept at handle throws, you can sharpen the blade up and use it for other purposes.

thanks for the replies fellas. looks as though i might wait a while on the thrower and just order the SEAL 2000 by itself. this just gives me another reason to look at knives for most of the day during school :p
