I’m new to this forum and mainly a Buck guy but have a Cold Steel Throwing Knife, original USA made and have questions you might be able to answer. I’d like to put work into the knife to make it more a Bowie/camp/field knife with wooden handles and a better than factory edge. I thought the steel was 1095 steel but seeing others are 1055. Can anyone tell me if this is a early issue what steel it is and or what RC it is. Is it worth the effort customizing?

Being a throwing knife, it’s more likely to be 1055 since it takes shock better than 1095 does. If your planning to use this knife as a chopping tool than that will probably be fine, but if you plan on using the knife for tasks requiring a finer edge, than the throwing probably wouldn’t be your best choice. That said, the only way to learn is by doing, and if nothing else, it’ll be a fun project.

The edge, steel and heat treat are optimized for throwing. It probably won’t make a good field knife.
