I recently bought a coldsteel trailhawk and am really pleased with it. I have never owned and axe before never mind a tomahawk so when it comes to sharpening one Im kinda lost. Ive seen many stones and various things which to me look as though they take quite a lot of skill to learn to do. Im prepared in the long run to do just this, however would like to know if there are any "desktop" like sharpeners, (the one you just place the blade and pull through) on the market, if so name brand etc.

I am able to get a fantastic, razor sharp, convex edge on my hawks with a Work Sharp Sharpener. It is a mini slack belt sharpener that works wonders. I can push cut newspaper with my CS Hawks. Check them out.

I have nothing against powered sharpeners but I think you should learn how to do it by hand first your not going to always be around a power source. Joe I like the looks of that file might grab one for my pack

Thanks guys, I appreciate you input, hopefully I will pick up the techniques and get the edge Im after.

The thing about power grinders and sharpeners is overall longevity of a blade. I can get many years out of a chainsaw chain through hand-filing whereas the average Joe is out buying another chain after every 4th or 5th commercial grinding. I love a Nicholson axe file for maintaining an edge on tool blades that I've tangled with before. First time around or if it is an abused blade it does speed things up to use a portable grinder in order to achieve some semblance of the shape and angle you ultimately want to go with. Just my opinion of course but I've been at this for quite a few years.
