cold steel trailmaster

why was the trailmaster discontinued

Don't think it's been discontinued...just delayed. It was supposed to be released in A2, but that's not going to happen. Now it is supposed to be offered in 4034SS, and 3V.

Not sure of the status of the San Mai version. The other San Mai knives were switched to Taiwan production, but the TM was still being made in Japan.

"I wonder why Mr Thompson can’t locate quality A2 steel ?"

I don't doubt he could find it. It sounded to me like it was just getting to the point it was going to cost so much to import it that it became not worth the cost at the price the market would bear. If it cost 3V prices why not use 3V ?

That

If that’s the case he should have just said so ?

Yeah, I agree. I'm thinking Lynn didn't expect the response he got from that memo they put out. That is being nice about it too. I'm not all that sure he knew how much inroads the culture of steel knuts had made into his customer base. In the old days I recall the catalogs came out with stuff like " 400 series steel" listed for one knife's blade and no one really complained. Things have changed with the customer base and we not only have more info but we have a voice. A loud one in fact. :)

I agree up to a point... many prople also underestimate basic steels and overestimate the importance of the so called super steels

I don’t need extra high edge retention in a chopper: I’m going to use it on wood not cardboard...

in my opionion steels like 1080, 5160 etc are great for choppers.

They are great for choppers. I agree. I'm also of the same opinion as Man with no name about continuing on with O1 until they improved the knife. Without trying to re-do the huge thread about the steel switch I will say I think Lynn was surprised at the reaction and push back from people here. I think he thought if he just talked up the steel everyone would agree and want to buy two in 4034.

I don't think anyone is calling for 10v or Maxamet trailmasters. When you can have it all with steels like 3V, Cruwear and 4V why not? They are upgrades in wear resistance and corrosion resistance and in some cases like O1 in toughness also. That means better overall knife not just higher edge retention/abrasive wear resistance.

According to Cold Steel, the A2 that they were testing did not work out well; they decided to make it in 2 versions 4034 and 3v; according to Andrew Demko, the tests done in 3v were outstanding according to him .The recon scout is also going to be in 3v as well.if you look at A2 update on the cold steel forums youll see the whole thread...

I always thought that 0170 (Carbon V) was near ideal for knives like the trailmaster.

I have long had a SRK in Carbon V and been well pleased with it. To quote the younger generation, "It's, like, totally freakin' awesome, man.":p
