All right. My apologies if this has been covered before; my browser is giving me some trouble and the search function isn't working for me as a result. [Any mods reading this might just want to double-check it; I punch in search criteria from the above toolbar - by 'new posts', 'calendar', and so on - and get a message returned saying that the 'document contains no data'. I'm using Mozilla Firefox 0.9.]

I'm wondering about the Cold Steel Triple Action knives. Specifically, whether the blade releases via centrifuge or actually requires pressure on the thumbstud to pull the blade from the top handle. Reason being that any such knives - gravity, balisong, and related centrifuge-release blades - are prohibited imports in New Zealand, and I don't want to find out whether the Triple Action fits this criterion by winding up in court.

Can anyone out here give me a yay or a nay on this? Could the Triple Action be counted as a centrifuge-release knife, or as some weird form of balisong?

Cheers,

Michael

The Triple Action is a POS, the handles are flimsy aluminum and will quickly develop play. If you try flipping it like on the CS Dvd, you will cut your fingers. The blade is alright, but will hit the handles when you "flip" it. Don't buy one, save your money for something else. The Phil Bogewoski (sp?) "tri-folder" is crude looking, but is a great knife. Hope this helps.

Likely, this would not be illegal in your area for one main reason: In order to open the knife, you must move a guard out of the way. You can not do this with shear inertia (Well, not comfortably anyway) then the blade can swing open easily.
I own one of these, so let me tell you what I think. The blade is unbelievable! Talk about a cutter... This blade held up terrificly! However a problem occured in the handle of mine. I had the tanto, non-serrated triple action. After a few weeks, I flipped it open and the guard flung accross the room. The blade had apparently cut through the screw that was holding it on. With out the guard, the blade was unable to lock into place making it worthless to me. This was some time back. It is possible that ColdSteel has remedied this. It is possible that this was a defect specific to my knife. Perhaps it was a design flaw with only the tanto version. I don't know.
While it did work, the handle locked up tight. Blade play was minimal. And boy could it cut!

I reckon they would be legal (tanto, not the double edge) since they are definitely NOT a balisong or gravity knife as defined by NZ customs - more like the (non gravity) paratrooper knife which is legal. Definitely would require 2 hands for a customs officer to open!

Personally I would spend my money on other folders....

Out of the box the handles are too tight to effectively flip it. But if you work it until it's loose (not much effort with the soft aluminum handles) it'll flip nicely.

It's centrifuge and not that great
It's rough out of the box, but a little tweaking is all it takes to make it a decent flipper.

Haven't cut a finger yet. Do you have one from Phil? I don't find mine that crude. It's well machined and flips like a dream. Of course I do have a problem of the blade hitting the outter handle once in a while. Really need to speak to Phil about that. What's crude is the Tri-Folder a friend of made from a Douk-Douk....

Sorry Tony, Phil's knife is not crude, I was thinking about the Perrin's tri-folder which is slightly crude looking, but a great user. Phil Boguszewski's Tri-folder is nice knife and a great user as well. (I don't have one, but I have handled them in the past)

Does the law state something like: "blade encased in split handles" are deadly weapons? Would this knife fall under this definition?

I've read alot about the triple folder and it seems like lots of you have had problems with the blade cutting the screw that holds the guard on. Seems like the tanto is the only one that seems to do that. I have the double edge, and it sure seems like the tip can't physically touch either one of the two screws. Mabye because of the shape of the tanto I could see how it would hit the screw.
I have only had the knife a few days, and at first it seemed like the most awkard thing, after 2 days of playing around with it, it actually seems like a very natural movement. If you hit your fingers or hit the outer guard with the blade, you just need more practice. It actually seems like the knife opens faster if you move slowly, and don't try to force it open.

Anyways ,about the Question on opening, it seems like a little bit of a centrifuge-release, but I think it really need the help of the thumbstud pushed at just the right time to open with a quick flip.

but I must agree that the aluminum handles make me kinda weary, they are really light (nice) but not so strong( :( ) and It seems like as they get looser and looser(remember I've only had it for a few days) they might not hold up so well long term. I know some of you have had one for years, I just hope mine holds up pretty good

Boy, this takes me back. I actually had a guy come into the store a few days ago complaining that his 3Xtion hadn't arrived yet. Apparently he special ordered one from someone else. AKA: I couldn't talk him out of it. Then he started ranting how it's not even on ColdSteel's website anymore (It is), so I just started telling him about all my problems with it.
He seems less angry now, but he still wants his money back.

I like the look and the idea behind it. If it wasn't illegal (I don't know if it really is  ) and made by Benchmade, maybe Spyderco, I'd deffinately pick one up.
