i was thinkin about how you can flip open benchmade knives using the axis lock. can you do the same with clod steel's knives with the ultra-lock?

The Ultra Lock is a relabled AXIS lock licenced from Benchmade, right? In that case, I'd expect it to work the same way.

The Ultra lock is NOT licenced from Benchmade. If it is, I'll eat my hat. The lock is functionally similar but in my opinion nowhere near as smooth. You CAN flick the blade out with a little more effort. The lockup feels safe. But with either a fast or slow opening, the blade (MY Blade, anyway) doesn't glide the way it should, and there is play in the balde when locked. I've experimented extensively with mine, tightning and lossening things to try to get the best performance... I don't care fro the Ultralock.

Its true I only own 1 of the original Recon 1's with the Ultra Lock. This is because my experience with the Axis lock was so much better.

I wouldnt worry about breaking the stop pin. I have a recon1 newer style with 440a steel. I flick it open with hard force and speed all the time, and flick it closed. All that has happened is a little indentation on the stop pin which is not even a tench of a millimeter deep. The play is minimal on mine at least. Now before I sound like a cold steel Rep. The axis lock is better and flicks slightly easier. And the axis lock and Ultra lock is very different. The Axis lock operates outside of the blades tang, and rotates around it and than stops in a straight portion that ramps up gradually. the Ultra lock rotates around a channel cut inside the tang, and than stops in a straight part where it dead ends.

It must be something else I'm thinking of. I seem to remember BM licencing the AXIS lock to a different company, I don't remember to whom though.

I don't KNOW that it's true, but is has been stated here previously that both Cold Steel and SOG pay Benchmade a license fee for their Ultra-Lock and Arc-lock derivative mechanism knives.

I had one of the Cold Steel Ultra Locks when they first came out. Good knife, and sharp too. I liked the knife a lot, until I actually used it to cut something other than paper. The first time I cut a wooden stick( a green stick that I was whittling on), the blade developed severe blade play immediately. :thumbdn:

While the CS design is similar in function to the Benchmade Axis lock, it is different in some ways.

The Axis lock is an open design in that lint or gunk can be blown or washed out from the pivot area of the blade. The Ultra lock is a closed design, and this can make cleaning sand, or dirt more difficult from the pivot should the need arise.

I only say that because I broke mine... "Faulty screw"

After Benchmade came out with the axis-lock, SOG and Cold Steel came out with their own versions of a "bolt-action" lock mechanism. I'd say BM's is by far the best. IMO. :)
