Hi Guys,

I hope I didn't scare everybody off with the title. I have a Cold Steel LTC
kukri for over 10 years now and it gets used a lot when I'm at work in the
garden. My 12 year old son also likes it a lot, so I was thinking of getting a
Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri. However since I came across BladeForums for about
2 years, I'm thinking of buying a real kukri.
Since I'm used to the CS size ( 12" blade, 5" handle ), wich model would you
suggest ?

Hi Vanman, Welcome to the Psycho Ward, or Cantina whichever you prefer.;) :D
Naw, the title won't scare us off, we're not scared of nuthin.:p;) ;)
My suggestion under your critieria would be a BGRS, or 17" to 18" GRS as it's also known as.
It's similar to the LTC in shape and size albeit heavier and a much more robust chopper. There's been one or two come up lately in UBDOD's IIRC. I know I saw one the other day.:)
I have a LTC myself and like it for its purpose which to me is a bent machete. I prefer it over my old issue machete 10 to 1 and I think it does a better job of chopping than the issue machete.
My BGRS is my favorite medium sized general purpose khukuri!

Thanks for the fast reply, Yvsa.
But what is a BGRS ?
Van, it's a baby GRS. The best thing to do is go to the HI Website and check out their line of khuk's. The BGRS is similar in size and shape to the CS LTC, but only similar, not exact. Actually I like the shape of the LTC better. Lynn designed a pretty khuk even if it isn't real practical or as useful as it could've been.:)

Van, here's a pic of the GRS which is a huge 22" khuk. The BGRS is a smaller version of it at 17" to 18" over all length.

Here's a pic of the BGRS in the for sale pages...

I reckon that the M43 is closer in size and shape to the Cold Steel Gurkee Kurkee.

My M43 is about a half inch longer, a little heavier and has a slightly shorter handle.

You're right BL, but the LTC is closer to the BGRS, well maybe not but the pic of your CS doesn't look like my LTC. The LTC is a completely different animule. Mine is stamped out of a flat piece of material with an edge bevel ground along the cutting edge. Don't think too many people have seen the LTC like I have. I'll have to take a pic of it one of these days and show it to everyone.;)

Vanman--welcome to the Cantina. You might want to take a look at an 18" Ang Khola as an all-around khukuri as well.

The pic I posted was the Cold Steel Ghurkha Kukri. You're right in that the LTC looks closer to the GRS than the M43. I thought Vanman was looking to buy a Gurkee Kurkee so I compared it to that. The Cold Steel Model in the pic is 3/16" thick at the spine. The H.I. is a little thicker and feels denser.

the one I have by Kumar has a nice, long handle so I can choke up for "delicate" work or slide my hand back for big chops. At 28oz and 18.5" it's not the biggest kid on the block but it's about as big as I care to go. Welcome aboard.
