I dont want to buy a $300 set. Just need a chef, slicer, ultility and paring knife. Hoping to get all 4 for under $100. I was hoping to get some suggestions. I like the vg-10 spiderco yin/yang($50) and cold steel's vg1 steel 7". Which one is more bang for buck. Are there any others I should be looking at. Any advice would be great. P.S. I do alot of BBQ'ing. thanks .

Don't have and haven't used the Cold Steel kitchen knives, but VG-1 makes a superb kitchen knife (or a bad one with great steel for that matter). I have one of Spyderco's serrated utility knives (is it the Yin or Yang? Dunno) and it's fantastic.

You might want to check out Forschner's line of kitchen knives - they have pretty much all the knives you might want (including chef, slicer, utility, and paring) and they're quite affordable.

+1 on the Forschners. Good value for the dollar.

The Spyderco knives are made from VG-10, not VG1. A different alloy completely. I don't know how VG1 compares. I would avoid serrations for anything other than a bread knife. They are a pain to sharpen and don't work as well for smooth trimming and dicing.
