I made a trade for a Cold Steel Vietnam Tomahawk that is being sent to me tomorrow. I realize that this is no-where near being an ATC Vietnam Tomahawk, but can someone please tell me what to expect with this one? (I have never seen or held one "in-person".).

And please be nice.:D.

First of all let me say that I am a CS fan. I just sent my tomahawk back to them because the handle broke and became loose. That was not from serious abuse, I only threw it for about 10 min and had only a couple of bad throws. The handle I believe they said it was hickory and it was painted in OD. Not very happy with it. It seems to me that there quality has gone down lately.

After taking one look when i first got mine i didnt think it would last long if i threw it so i havent.
I think it would come loose after 1/2 hour even if you got a stick every time.
You pay for what you get.

PS im still dying to throw it!

Well, the trade that I was looking at didn't go, but a REALLY nice guy ("steelswing") is sending one to me tomorrow, anyway.:).

But I'd REALLY like to have an ATC Vietnam Tomahawk; (See my ad in The "For Sale/Trade" Forum)...(Hint, hint).:D.

if you are wanting it to throw you should get the ATC but if you just want one to have I guess the CS is good enough. Ive talked the wife into buying me an ATC for our anniversary :D

No, I'm not looking at tossing this 'Hawk...Just putting it near my bed, so if there's an intruder at night, I'll have a choice between shooting him a few times with my 10mm Glock pistol, slicing/stabbing him with my SOG Tigershark, or hacking him up with the 'Hawk.:D.:D.

I DO hope to get an ATC Vietnam Tomahawk, 'tho...:).

Nice-looking 'Hawk, but it's way beyond my price-range.:(...That's why I'm "interested" in the Cold Steel version.

Dann,
Ooops! I really had no idea what price range the CS hawks were in! This one is cheaper than an ATC VT, though! ;)

Well, as an update...

I received my $10 Cold Steel Vietnam Tomahawk a couple days ago (Thanks, "steelswing"!), and today I finally got around to finishing my "customizing" of it:

*I thinned-out, evened-up, & sharpened ALL the edges of both the blade and the spike to near razor-sharp.
*I tightened-up the head-to handle fit...(It was SLIGHTLY loose, but now it's nice-n-tight.).
*I spray-painted the head a nice satin black...(4 coats.)
*I removed (sanded) the green paint from the handle...(I left it "natural".).
*I wrapped the lower 1/2 of the handle with a sheet of black padded leather, (as well as a 1/2" strip of black padded leather at the head/handle junction).
*I installed a black paracord wrist-lanyard in the handle.

Although it's still not an ATC 'Hawk, it's now not really TOO bad of a 'Hawk, and it looks and feels pretty darn good!.:).

Any chance of a picture of your handy work posted on here

I, too would like to see a picture of the finished product.
i ordered a VTAC a few nights ago. Part of it's duties will also be standing guard at the foot of the bed.
Currently, I have on tap to deal with "night noises" my Glock 21 with glasers, a WWII samurai sword, and my wife with a SwampRat Rattail.

I want an ATC VTAC as well, actually really really really bad. Almost threw a hint to the wife, but caught myself. I think with those hawks though, you will never see anyone get rid of theirs, so I guess I am just going to have to suck it up and go to the website and get one for myself. Oh well...Merry Christmas to Me!!!!!!!!!

I did see a statement about Cold Steel and have this little tid bit to day. I bought a Kukri from them about 3 years ago, I love it. Of course it scares the heck out of my 2 daughters, but then again they are 6 and 3. Now just recently I looked at a knife my friend was carrying and it was from cold steel, I was astonished by the lack of quality in the blade material. It seemed really cheap feeling, that is about the best way I can explain it. I will not trade my kukri for anything, I am just glad that I bought it when I did.

I've wanted a hawk for awhile and thought about cs until I picked one
up at a gunshow and the head fell down the handle and the next one
had a sheet metal screw holding the head in place on the handle. I think
one piece all metal is the way to go but very expensive.

I bought a CS Trail Hawk recently and was a bit disappointed in the quality. The price is pretty low, however. The head was a bit loose on the handle and the blade was very dull...maybe unusable without sharpening is a better description. The hatchet head is secured to the handle with a 3mm allen screw. I was able to easily tighten that up, but wonder just how secure it really is long-term.

Bottom line is that I'd pass on the CS hawks unless you would like a project, or just intend to throw them around for fun. YMMV.
