Hi, I own a Tanto Voyager (Large, has a 4 inch blade) and was wondering if anyone has verified the claims made on Cold Steel's "Proof" video?
Cold Steel makes a good knife, but is it really better than EVERYBODY elses?
I'd like to hear what other folks say.
Eric.

The Cold Steel Voyagers are very good knives. When asking if they're the best, the best for what?

The lockback mechanisms on the Voyagers, in my experience, are very strong. In pure lock strength, they are almost certainly exceeded by the REKAT Rolling Lock folders, the Chris Reeve as well as other makers' frame lock folders, and the Benchmade Axis Lock.

Are the CS Voyagers' locks strong enough for what most folding knives are designed for? More than strong enough. What's more important than pure brute lock strength is lock reliability. Any folder's lock can fail under the right circumstances, such as if it's not kept clean, if overstressed in a way not intended, etc.

The Voyagers have excellent edge geometry, and are fairly easy to resharpen. I personally rate them as excellent middle-end working folders. (by the way, the manufacturer CS contracts to make the Voyagers in Japan also makes knives for Spyderco, Al Mar, Outdoor Edge, SOG, etc.)

I have not tested the knives like in the video, because I want to use them. CS admitted the extreme tests shown can ruin a knife. Plus an older, much-used knife wouldn't test at the same level as a brand-new knife.

I highly recommend you check out the link in m's post. It's an eye opener!

I don't know if they're better than everyone else's, but I can tell you I like and use my $52 CS Voyager 4" plain edge clip point a heck of a lot more than the $179 Emerson Raven 3.5" chisel point tanto I bought first. I'm sure there are better folders out there than the CS voyagers, but for the money they are truly excellent knives. Good steel, and good edge geometry, as long as you remember it's a knife and not a crowbar.

Hi, I appreciate the information on the Cold Steel Voyagers you guys have brought out. Thanks. I also have a Benchmade ATS34 4 inch knife which I like a lot. It is a clip point plain edge. I thought of buying the serrated, but realized that I'd be doing a lot of wood-cutting with the knife so I opted for the plain edge. There's nothing like a plain edge to whittle and shape wood.
Also, the Benchmade ATS34 is very easy to sharpen, as I sharpen my own knives. I did have a bit of trouble sharpening the CS Voyager and almost lost the edge before I figured out what I was doing wrong! But, 1 minute on my diamond sharpener (which I carry in my pocket along with my knife) and the Benchmade was back into fine form.
Eric.
