cold steel voyager?

Hey guys, any opinion on the Cold Steel Voyager? I am planning to get a clip point xl, preferably with a plain edge, but given the price difference, probably rather a combo edge. It's the most "bad ass" folding knife that is still affordable and that is the only thing that attracts me to it. I have a collection of folders and all my needs are covered by sensible knives in civilized lengths that I regularly carry. Some of them are just to garnish the box, though. Utility is not the issue, obviously (except if I get attacked by a grizzly bear in the subway on my way to the office) but, still, I don't want to end up with a sorry piece of steel, as I have a couple of times in the past. Any thoughts? Thank you, guys.

PS I looked around, but I may have missed "the" thread, if so, please direct me.

Very solid knives. You aren't going to get a sorry piece of steel, as you put it, they're good, tough blades with solid cutting geometry. I'll admit, I like larger folders, but I find the huge Cold Steel offerings to be too much. I just feel mildly embarrassed/sheepish when using one, so I tend towards their large rather than XL offerings.

The one exception to this rule, and something I might suggest, is the Rajah 2. It's just as ridiculous, if not slightly more so, than their other monster offerings, but it has an odd practicality as a folding machete/hatchet stand in. If you may have to clear a trail but don't want to wander around with a machete on your belt or pack it's actually a reasonable option.

Voyager is okay.
For a big knife though, the Rajah 2 is hard to beat for the money, as just mentioned.

I have voyager large and an extra large...the large is a little wide in-pocket but the blade size is thin and slicey but still big...a great edc blade
The XL is just awesome to hold! You willsmile when you open it...not super practical but super fun.
Both are sharp and the aus8 steel is good in my experience...a quality product at very good price
I have clip point plain edge in both
Get one before they are all gone...the discontinued american lawmans are now more than $100 on some sites

If what you're looking for is a big, bad a knife for a good price, you can't do much better IMO. I have a tanto xl myself. Like it a lot, but not very practical to carry almost ever for me, but its a great knife.

Cold steel folders are my "go to" knives. I've got one in every bug bag, fishing pack, and carry one in rotation with a Southard. I recommend them to my coworkers...for the price, it really is difficult to beat.

Thanks a lot guys for your input and i apologize if i started this discussion in the wrong place. I noticed the word "fun" to dominate your answers and that is exactly what i am after with that huge blade. My bank account will soon be a Cold Steel Voyager XL lighter.

You'll be very happy with the XL Voyager. I have two of the L models. Wicked ergonomics. Both are perfectly centered, offer perfect fit and finish, no blade play, hair popping sharp out of box with a smooth pivot to boot! Do you know how many knives that cost up to ten times as much fail to do this? Don't even get me started on the Tri-Ad lock, I'll end up writing an essay. The Voyager is a properly made knife. Best value for modern folders in the industry if you ask me.

I have a lot of these toys. The Tanto XL seems to have slightly thicker blade stock than the clip, which could be checked out if it concerns you. But I'd go for the Rajah 2 over them all. For real world practicality I usually grab a large, which is more than enough for average uses. And the large is better balanced ergonomically.

I just made up my mind and ordered the vaquero xl. Call me nuts, but I found this one to be the most kick-ass looking of all of them. While my edc will still be one of the SAKs I rotate and my Buck 110 will sill be the one to come with me in the woods, the big cowboy knife will just put a smile on my face whenever i'll need it. Yes, and I will probably win most "my knife is bigger than yours" contests. :)

I certainly won't call you nuts. PE or serrated?

I've got a PE L Vaquero, I really dig it, but I kind of regret not getting the fully serrated version before it was discontinued in that size. I like serrations in general and Cold Steel's are really vicious. That said, the PE version cuts like a beast, and I'm really glad I own it.

Also, good taste with the Buck 110!

I pull my old 110 out now and then to clean the green crud off the bolsters, and an oiling. Funny how it used to seem heavy, but not anymore. Maybe because I have so many big folders. Yes I have an XL serrated Vaq. also. I have carried but never used it. I remember getting a side light bulb for my vehicle in a car parts store. I saw a clerk with a knife clip in his pocket. I asked if I could see it and he was fine with it. He popped out some little Walmart folder. Then I pulled my serrated Vaq. out. His friendly jocular disposition changed like a cloud passing over the sun as I popped it open. I was carrying it as I metal detect the edges of town and have been circled/challenged by dogs more than once. And it is a scrotal puckering experience to have three dogs moving in and out of you in a circle, and feeling around for your teeny Swiss Army knife. What I learned from parts man is that even some semi knife dudes can be put off by the big folders. So there is a time and a place for them, which for me is not in public.

Love my voyagers, especially the XL versions. My tanto is pretty much a SD only carry, but I would like to get the clip point as well for a hard use "pocket machete"
Big boy makes the Recon 1 look stubby..

That I can totally relate to, upnorth. In a former life I did a lot of field work as a geologist and was many times surrounded by unfriendly half-wild sheepdogs. Never went anywhere without first making myself a long sturdy stick. At least those beasts had their imaginary boundary and if you managed to crawl out of it, they would just let you go.

PE or serrated?

I decided on the PE XL. It's just for the looks, not utility. I read that the serrated will go through anything but the PE looked more traditional to me. Besides all my knives are plain edged except for a SOG Seal Team, but that one is for "putting a smile on my face" too. When I go out I pick smaller blades.

About the Buck 110, I just couldn't make myself replace it with another folder. It gets every job done that I ask it to do! And then, it's a nice piece too: what can be nicer than stainless, brass and wood together.

Great knives; I've packed a clip point and a tanto for years. AUS8 as Cold Steel does it takes a very fine edge and holds it; there's a pinch of vanadium in it. Cold Steel's CTS-XHP blades hold an edge even better. Have a look at their website for the comparison video. The Tri-Ad lock on my American Lawman was stiff at first but smoothed in a few weeks; still very strong lock.

Voyagers are nice. I've got all 3 XL models, in both plain edge and full serrated, plus a large Vaquero.

I got my knife in the mail yesterday (vaquero xl plai edge) and I am very happy with it. I used it right away to massacre an evil cardboard box that got shredded in no time, polyfoam pieces inside and all. I like the stonewash, it really looks like some nice patina. The pocket clip on mine was a bit too stiff and combined with the pattern on the handle it was really hard to pull it out if clipped to the pocket. So the clip came off and the knife still sits well in the pocket since it's big enough to fill it. The blade is so big that it swings out on its own if you flick your wrist, so the thumb stubs are not really vital. I will stop here but I promise a show-off with pictures soon. Thanks to everybody for the support in getting this pocket sword.

(except if I get attacked by a grizzly bear in the subway on my way to the office)

Stranger things have probably happened. :D

Cold Steel is known for insanely strong pocket clips. They will ease up a bit with carry, but I usually pop mine off and give them a very slight bend in my bench vise(with some thin pieces of wood for padding). I've also heard of people putting a coin, several business cards, or similar under them and letting them sit for a while.
