I have a CS Voyager that I have used very little, and am wondering from people that have them and have used them hard, how they hold up... I have read on hear that a lot of people don't like CS marketing, but I don't care about that. Just want to know about the knives... I know they claim to be the strongest and sharpest, but I don't pay much attention to advertising.
The Ultimate Hunter that I have is built like a tank, but thats a whole different knife....

Strongest and the Sharpest. I doub't it. Their knives offer a great perfomance/value ratio for the money. However, the knives are in themselves made of a fair quality. Nothing to write home about. But at the same time not a wal-mart piece of crap either. As far as sharpness is concerned. They come pretty sharp as the way of a knife company these days. Happy Hunting and good luck.:)

Tough, reliable users... not pretty but they cut, and cut, and cut. AUS8 is an excellent steel with a bit of vanadium, and you can beat on the handles forever.

i have 2 and i love them to death. very strong, very sharp and will last a long time.

in the new knife mag the one writer writing on tactical folders commented how he had a voyager for 15 yrs now and it still performs like day one.

The Voyager, Vaqueros and several other folders marketed by Cold Steel are your basic bare bones users designed for heavy use. They do market better ones and they do market worse ones also. For the money the two above are quite a lot of folder truth be told. Trust me the locks from CS are consistantly among the best made, strongest, and most reliable in the industry from my own observations and comparisons of them on the inner workings side by side with others I've seen on my bench to rebuild after taking off the FRN handles to redo them in titanium and Micarta or wood.

The Ultimate Hunter folder from Cold Steel is one that flies below the radar of many just as several other models from them do and yet these folders are among some of the best bang for the buck in high quality reliable and strong locking knives available for the working man. Its a big knife but what a knife. OMG its a good one for $55 and some shipping.

I have my fair share of complaints and concerns about Lynn Thompson like everyone else around here. I'll be one of the first to admit that he is certainly no angel but he is a black belt in marketing, and as much as you can find to say bad about the man, and some of his doings he does see to it that his company and those he contracts with to make what he sells make some of the best locks in this industry. I personally know many law enforement officers using CS knives that beat the snot out of them daily and have relied on them steadily for many years.

I don't buy many CS knives these days but I supported the company for many years and the reason was I knew the locks were good from seeing them up close and personal to compare them to other companies I had also seen up close and personal on the inside. Truthfully there are draw backs though like with anything else. The warranty could be better on Cold Steel folders in my opinion. For that matter they could provide a little more leway with the end line users even if the warranty did remain as it is, seeing as CS promotes beating the hell out of the knives themselves to prove their worth but will not allow you to do same without void of the skimpy warranty of the product.

Fortunately for me I only needed a warranty call from them for one knife and they mailed me the new thumb stud without charge and not needing the knife. I owned a lot of CS at one time. They were the majority of my users in fact, but the reality of the warranty finally set in with me. Why spend the money with them when you can spend equal money with Spyderco, get a better blade steel, every bit as good if not better lock and deal with a man of Sal Glesser's character with a far better customer service and support as well as warranty? Some don't like the opening hole. For those Cold Steel is a great choice. For me Spyderco in a side by side comparison on the 'user' line is the hands down choice these days 90% of the time.

I really like my Ultimate Hunter, even used it for a while as my edc. I think it would be even better with different scales. The rubbery ones tend to be kinda grabby in the pocket. But for use as a hunting knife they work great.
Its to bad to hear that their warranty isn't very good. I haven't been on here to long but I have been spending quite a bit of time on the Spyderco forum, and as you mentioned , Sal and Spyderco seem like a standup organization with a great product....

I have the tanto point 5 inch, the lock feels very strong to me, even with some very slight movement.
Somebody else commented that the voyager series has a hollow-ground edge and the edge rolls under hard impact(chopping) small tree branches. But his Vacquero Grande held up well under the same work, as it had a flat-ground edge.
I don't like the serrations and am always scared the small teeth will break, so I get the plain edge ones. For that price, I feel they are OK. I also like the clip point which I find useful, although it's a bit fine and not so robust.
I have handled lots of the voyagers and they all feel OK to me, but I would use them for slicing work and stay off the impacts.

I have the X2, its a little big. If i had to do it again, I'd go with a smaller one. Its been a good knife to me overall. It takes a really sharp egde for stainless.

A have a few CS knives, and I have to say that if you don't pay full price they are good knives for the money. My XL voyager is one of the few knives I feel was not over hyped too bad on the CS DVDs. This thing really cuts!
I abuse the hell out of it and it still goes on. For the 50 I put into it I am very happy.
As far as all of the hype, hey.....I've done professional sales. I know effective marketing when I see it. The Whopper may be America's favorite burger, but I'd wager any backyard BBQer on the board here can make a better burger.

I have two Voyagers. One is a small plain edge and I really like it. It locks up nice and tight, is very easy and smooth to open, takes and holds an edge and is very light to carry in the pocket. I also have one of the medium size models with a serrated edge. The knife is ok but I don't really care for the serrated edge.

I have a Recon 1 and it has served me well. I don't EDC it anymore because it was a little big for that. My only complaint is the clip the blade rides a little high for my liking. I also keep a Mini PAL clipped to my dog tags. The short serrated blade makes quite the little cutter.

Yes. Cold Steel folders are all have a one year warranty. 1 year for the highest priced Talwar or Black Sable, or the lowest priced one in their line up whatever that may be now. Fixed blades are five years.

Its one of the worst warranty converages in the industry to be perfectly honest with you.

I have a med. part serr. tanto point Voyager and for the most part it has held up fairly well. I have had some problems with chipping the edge and the tips of the serrations but I use knives kinda hard so I almost expect that kind of thing. Handles are very tough as are most FRN styles.

I don't understand why a company would have such a crappy warranty.
They must not have much confidence in their products, or they don't care about repeat customers. now that I've heard this I'll make it a quest to use the hell out of it and see if it craps out. If it does I won't even bother with warranty. Its to bad because I really like the knife.

I have had a Recon I for several months and the edge held up really nice and I didn't have to sharpen until I cut up a leather boot. A few passes on 16 degree ceramic sticks and sharp as new.

Over the years I've picked up a few Cold Steel knives because of the holiday sales or discontiued knives etc. I've always found them to be excellent knives if you dont pay retail price. I got an SRK from a pawn shop for 15.00 and it's been rode hard and is still stays sharp and the tip survived my throwing knives phase so it's good to go in my book. My only problem with Lynn or whoever they blatanly stole Brian Tighes design and sale the rip off for as much as the real deal. As for the voyagers the large one is the least expensive mega folder on the market and it's on my to buy list.
