I'm sort of looking for a cheap EDC folder. I like the large clip point voyager but I don't know anything about this VG-1 steel. Is it decent stuff? How does it compare with VG-10 or the old aus-8 steel that they used before? Thanks.

I have the small Voyager in AUS8A. The design, fit and finish and ergomonics are wonderful, but the blade is a real P.O.S.

I hope you have better luck with the VG-1.

Hey! How about a report after you've used it for a while??:p

I have a several different Voyagers in VG-1 steel that I like a whole lot...the edge retention is very good and they are tough "edc" folders in my opinion.

I also have one of the CS Scimitar folders in VG-1 which does not seem to hold an edge nearly as well. This leads me to believe that it can be somewhat hit or miss.

Aus 8-A does not hold an edge quite as well as VG-1 from what I have seen but it is easier to resharpen.

I have three AUS8A Voyagers and they are all great knives. The heat treatment is good, and combined with the very thin grind of the blade, you can get a very sharp edge easily. The blade geometry also makes them good slices.

I would expect the newer VG-1 versions to be at least as good.

When you say that, what do you mean? Do you have a serrated blade or a plain edged? What blade length is it? Do you mean it's not strong, it doesn't hold an edge, or it corrodes—what? Just calling it a POS doesn't tell us anything.

I've got a number of Voyagers in various sizes and configurations. I've found them to hold an edge well, to be strong and nigh indestructable. If you like a razor sharp knife all the time, you'd do well to consider a blade made from S30V, but it will cost you. If you want just a good all aroound knife, the Voyagers are fine.

I have a medium Voyager clip point, plain edge, I have EDC'd it for years and am happy with it. Very light, sturdy, it came very sharp and holds the edge well. I tiny bit of corrosion near the thumbstud (got a little blood on it, a little accident there, heh). Not sure what steel it is, AUS I think.

My small voyager will take a scary sharp edge. But slice up a few tomatos and an onion and it's dull. I keep it on the kitchen table, not in my pocket.

I keep a BM 710 D-2, or 610 Rukus (S30V) in my pocket. I really like everything else about that little knife. I'd buy another one tomorrow if they offered it in S30V or D2.

I have had the large clip point voyager for several years. It has been a fine knife for me. I must add however thhat I use a kinfe the way it should be used, I don't use a folder for fixed blade tasks and I don't use a fixed blade for jobs much better suited to a hatchet. If you use the voyager for cutting and keep it sharp, it will serve you very well. Its a good cutter and slicer.

Well, I pretty much made up my mind. I want the plain edge clip point with 4" blade. I told my wife it's what I want for either Christmas or my birthday next month. I think it's a good EDC folder that's cheap enough so I won't hesitate to use it. I've been using an Endura forever and I just wanted a change. Thanks for the input.

Hmmmm. How about other chores? I know that super steels hold a better edge than AUS8, but I've had better luck with AUS8 than that (though I haven't tried cutting food). I'll have to give it a whirl.
