I was wondering if anyone can help me with this question. I was thinking about getting either a Western or Long Hunter knife and would like to know if either one was thick enough to do light batoning.

Yeah But the Cold Steel Bushman would be a much better (tough!) knife for that application.

A while back some guy "batoned" a Long Hunter through a cow's breat bone. It was heavily damaged but it did the job. Then Cold Steel replaced it for him.

I just picked up 2 Long Hunters for $12.50 a piece on closeout from Cold Steel's Special Projects website. My expectations were low but after taking one out yesterday and using it to make fuzz sticks and baton some wood I have to say I'm very impressed. The knife cuts like a big Mora and easily batoned reasonable sized pieces of wood. The sheath is actually pretty nice too. The mirror polish on the blade is impressive for such a low priced knife. After using it for a couple of hours it still cut through a paper sheet like a razor, so edge retention is pretty good as well. If self defense should come into play God forbid, it looks like a big mean gleaming kitchen knife with a 7" blade and would hopefully scare a bad guy away before ever having to use it.

At the price Cold Steel is blowing them out for it has to be one of the best deals out there. Best thing is that the knife and sheath only weigh 6.8 oz, so it is really light for such a large and useful blade. Get one before they are gone.

These are great in the kitchen as well, I'd snag a couple before they are all gone. They seem a little light to me for batonning, but I like them for a lot of other tasks. The Krups steel sharpens up easily.

You ican baton with it, but don't expect too much from it like that. It's a great food prep knife.
