I just bought a Medium Voyager tanto 3" blade, and a Large Voyager tanto 4" blade. Why two? I didn't want them to get lonley. Anyway, I noticed the blade on the 3" model has a small bit of play in it. Laterally and horizontal. I know this is not an expensive knife, but is that o.k.? The large 4" model locks up solid. I wanted the medium for everyday carry and the 4" for duty carry. I don't want to carry the 3" if there is going to be a lock problem. Is play on a lockback zytel knife o.k.?

I have a couple of large Voyagers and they both lock up solid. I'd take the medium back to wherever you got it and ask for another one. You've only got ten fingers, so why risk any?

I wouldnt worry about it, if its a small bit. I have owned plenty of Zytel lockbacks. I have a Spyderco Endura that is several years old. It has been used very hard. It came out of the box with a small bit of play. Lock-up was never compromised, and the play has never gotten any worse. I think sometimes a tad bit of play get blown way out of reason, it happens in knives, and most times it should not affect funtion.

UPDATED and REVISED

I purchased a Scimitar about 6 mos. ago.
It too had play (side to side only).
I posted the same concern at the CS forum. Other members said to tighten up the pivot screw. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to try this yet.
I am not too worried about the side to side play, but if the lock to blade had any play in it I would have sent it back. That would make me very nervous. I like my fingers.
Good luck to ya'

Don't be worried about the one that you can see,be worried about the one that you cannot!!

i've had alot of exprience with this brand and others-lockback folders have this tendency andi don't buy them anymore! i only buy linerlocks, axis, roundeye locking mechanisms. if one of these have a problem,it's because that particular knife has a problem not the type.even if lockbacks are nice and tight blade to back they will give shortly and while i agree with you that it doesn't affect function it just bugs me.

I have the 3 voyagers in large medium and small and none of them have any play in them at all. I would as suggested take it back to where you bought it and get one that is solid. I have purchasd cheapo knives with out the play, take it back.

I have a voyager xlarge sitting right in front of me now and it has no play in the blade. But there is something that has been bothering me about the pivot. There is a gap between the the zytel scale and the blade right up at the tip of the knife handle past the pivot. The gap is big enough to shove in a couple playing cards on one side of the blade. The other side is fine. Looking into the pivot I can see that there seems to be a molded washer extending off the inside of the zytel, I guess so that the blade doesn't experience too much friction. What bothers me is that it looks like the knife was flexed in a vise to produce this bend at the top of the handle. Just want to know if all voyagers have this gap at the top.

Generallobster just checked out my three Voyagers and there is no gap anywhere on the knives fit and finish are perfect. They are good solid knives.

I wouldn't worry but if you still have concerns call CS
