The new 2011 voyagers are here. In your opinion would the XL FFG clip point or the XL Tanto make a better self defense blade as a back up to a CCW. Or as a primary where a CCW(pistol) was not allowed.

Really doubt it matters. What is your training background? That may have an influence on which to choose.

The tanto inherently has better penetration vs. armor (or things of the like), but for general SD and EDC, it is all based on personal style. I like a tanto because it has a nice think tip, and is very easy to resharpen. The tanto also has higher cutting drag, with it working best at a higher angle. The actual differences are pretty minute, so it is all personal opinion.

Better penetration vs. armor? Not in my opinion. I think the clip point offers better penetration in any situation, and the tanto point just gives you slightly better tip strength. Personally, I think that the clip point option is superior for a self defense blade, but not by any large margin. I don't think it will really make much difference in the real world, but as far as absolute measurable performance characteristics, I'd bet the farm on the clip point. (Disclaimer: I'm from Texas, and this may affect my judgement)

My honeymoon with the tanto style is pretty much over. They're okay but I've never needed the extra tip strength. I have needed more belly curve for everyday chores. I'd go with a clip point just for that reason. Sooner or later you might need to use the knife for non-defense job. But if you also carry a 2nd edc knife then maybe the tanto is the ticket.

And just to complicate the issue :o there is a third choice: the Vaquero

It's designed for slashing (like the Spyderco Civilian). But still I'd go with the clip point for versatility. The only Tri-Ad knife I have is the Lawman. I gotta admit I do like it now that it's more broken in (it was stiff and gritty out of the box). I had assumed the hubbub surrounding the Tr-Ad was just marketing hype but I was wrong. It's by far the sturdiest back-lock I own.
