ive been a fan of the cold steel design of knives for a while now but when it comes to full on functionality i find theyre not as good as benchmade or kershaw and are those knives that they sell for upwards of sebenza prices really worth it? share your cold steel opinons

try a search through google for threads here.

being new, you may not know, but this is a volatile subject.

from the products, manufacturing, design, to the owner, a great many members have strong feelings one way or the other.

The Ti Lite is decent for the price but it doesn't really have a lot of utilitarian use because of the blade shape.

The voyagers are good for the price as well. The smaller ones are perfect for EDC but I hate their pocket clips.

Some are fine, some are not. Some are WAYYY overpriced, while others are a good value.
NEVER pay MSRP though. Never.
Most folks here dislike the owner, not the knives.

Well, against my better judgement, I'm gonna reply. Though this thread is probably gonna be merged with the rest anyway.

This is a blanket statement. All these companies sell lots of knives ranging in price, lock style, and materials. Saying company A's entire line performs better than company B's entire line, when both companies are quite diverse, is rather silly.

Cold Steel sells some very usable cheap knives and some very nice pricier knives. The people that say all their knives are junk, just because they don't like the owner, are amusing at best.

and are those knives that they sell for upwards of sebenza prices really worth it?
It's all subjective. Some people think that anything pricier than a Mora or SAK are a waste of money. Others think a $25,000 custom is worth every penny. What a knife is worth depends entirely on the buyer.

That said. I recently picked up a Black Sable in a trade. To me it is worth the asking price, because I really like the knife. It's ergonomically perfect for my hand. Someone with smaller hands may not think it's worth it at all. All subjective.

what model are you looking at? ive got an old 5 inch voyager, a carbon 5 recon scout and a large peacekeeper.ive had the recon scout and voyager for ever and they are very tough durable knives for a resonable price. i cant see that you could break either knife unless you where purposly trying with some of those assanine tests like chopping cinder blocks. i cant speak for the new products except for the peacekeeper that i have been useing as a beater that has held up well.cant speak about the president of the company either, read alot of negative stuff but it doesnt concern me when im buying cutlery.

I like Cold Steel because they are willing to do a lot of things no-one else will (like the Rajah II I'm about to order).

That said, Lynn could really try to make his business look a little more respectable, but if you cut through all the crap you can find some pretty good stuff.

I can't respect thompson, but I think some of the knives are good for the price. I own a Ti-Lite, and I like it a lot. Voyagers, Gunsites, Vaqueros - I think these are great knives for the price. And 3, 4, 5" and 6" work knives? I wish some other companies would make a variety of sizes for each model. Who else makes knives at prices like that?

Their $100+ knives, though... I don't think those are worth it.

Buy one of their inexpensive knives, like a Voyager, try it out, and see for yourself if you like it. If you don't, you're not out much. For me personally, I'm kind of on the fence about CS, although I don't care for the owner's attitude.

thx - cpr

I like several of their knives; particularly the Voyager Series and their carbon steel blades. As others have noted, Thompson's business practices are dubious.

they have some decent products.

inmop the cold steel voyagers are some of the best deals in the knife world. they are big, tough folders that only cost arounnd 50 dollars or so.

the cold steel voyager 4 inch bowie is one of my all time favorite knives and one of my most trusted EDCs.

the cold steel urban pal is another great deal, its a small punch dagger that only costs like 15 dollars.

Allright! A Cold Steel thread! Now all we need is an S30V thread... Oh... We got that as well... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=580914

But since you're quite new here...

My opinion about Cold Steel:

Some are good, I've got a Ti-Lite which I like, and a Trail Master San Mai III which I also like but was way overpriced. And I got a Triple Action which I don't like at all. The ethics and advertisements of Cold steel put me off from buying more. (Also my interests have shifted more to custom knives).

Anyway, here's some free advice: before you start a thread about a subject as general as "what about Cold Steel/Mantis/Strider/Busse/Chris Reeve/Knifetests.com..." it may be a good idea to do a little searching first.

Kind regards,

Jos

I personally like a lot of their designs and just took delivery of a Sisu. Have more models in the pipeline. Yes, some of them are rather pricey but semi-custom blades tend to be and they're still a lot cheaper than some of the Sheffield (England) semi-customs.

Anyway I'm satisfied with their quality and they look great in my collection. Would love a TiLite with Ti handles but they're like hens' teeth around here

Can't comment on how they actually perform cause I only collect & don't use them.
