i am pondering the purchase of a cold steel katana, but I have heard nothing about them. I know cold steel makes excellent products I have a few already but i am unsure of their swordsmithing. If anyone has any information on the warrior series I would like to know. Domo Arigato

Survey says they are a pretty good bang for the buck. They aren't high end production pieces, but they are sturdy and balanced pretty well. In a nutshell nothing spectacular but probably worth the asking price.

I read an article on sword forums about 2 years back. They did a showdown between the cold steel katana and the paul chen practical katana - Both tested equally in cutting tatami but basically CS won out for being more authenticly dressed with quality materials. The PK of that version had poor quality ornaments and I think even a brass plated habaki. The 4th generation PK changed all that. I still wanna know if the handle is removable on the CS katana. I dont think they have a temperline though. None I can see from pics anyway. Hope this sheds some kinda light.

I own 4 CS Katana. Don't really know which came first, but they are very much like the Fred Chen Cicada Forge blades. Since they are not differentially tempered, there is no hamon. All my blades are nicely balanced, though. Since I own a number of Cicada Forge based Katana, including one by Rick Barrett and one by LiveBlade, I like the CS swords a lot.

Nice piece of steel for the money, and I have seen them for sale at phenominal prices. However, don't confuse the CS with a semicustom Cicada Forge.

can you post some pics of your katanas? I and probably everyone else would love to see them!

I have a CS katana, the 88K, which now is their "high end" one. It is a fine blade for the price, keeps quite sharp. I've had a problem keeping it from rusting though- I've used Renn wax, tuf cloth, Eezox... I'm going to try mineral oil next. It's a good cutter though! If you don't want a traditional look, the Himlayan Imports Everest katana is a good buy.

Try breakfree clp. It works very well on my sword. Its nothing but humid here in my maine for 4 months...which is usually murder on steel. Plus a bitch to get off on those crossguards. Been using CLP for a while.
