It depends, what will be it's primary use? Work, defense?..? If you're looking for affordable strong sticky pokers, they have a bunch of those to pick from. If you want a durable edge that can go for longer periods of time without sharpening look at S30V. It's all the rage right now.
Cold steel products have always been a touchy subject here. Use the search function and you will find out more than you will ever need to know about CS. Generally speaking, they contract many good quality products for the price. Many people here hate the advertising, hype, and designs that they use. The search function should give you hours of entertainment.
Kershaw uses a lot of S30V, I don't think Cold Steel uses any S30V. But Carbon V is similar, it holds an edge longer than their other offerings. CPMS30V, CPM440V, S60V, D2, M2, A2, and other harder tool steels are great for smaller blades. For larger blades, you want less brittle steels that can be hammered on and not chip with hard use.
hi norco, welcome to bladeforums! S30V is a type of stainless steel. as far as Cold Steel, i guess it depends what you want to use the knife for and which knife you'll end up with. some models are better than others. give us some more details of what you want from the knife, if you can.
I just tried the search function using Cold Steel. Too much info associated with the phrase for the search function to handle, lol. Try using "Lynn Thompson" for the search. That brings up numerous pages. Since they contract so many designs it would help us out if you could tell us what you wanted to use it for. They sell so many different types that I am sure that one will fit your needs.
Who's flaming? If I had to chop a zombie in half, I'd use a Cold Steel.
All kidding and politics aside, Cold Steel does make pretty good knives for the money. The Voyagers in particular, and some of their fixed blades are great. The SRK, Recon Tanto and Bushman are good, solid knives that do what they are designed to do and hold up well. I own literally dozens of Cold Steel products and I've never been disappointed with the performance of any of them. Of course, I bought all of them before I arrived at Blade Forums.
And the fighting Sarong is a formidable CQC weapon !
