I'm watching the More Proof dvd and theres been a few knives that have been made of 420 sub zero quenched, whatever that means and I was wondering if anybody has used any of them. I've notice that they have a few models in that type of steel being used and was wondering if they are worth the price. I know cold steel is a good brand as I've got a few of thier knives but when some mentions 420 it makes my blood run cold. Anybody play with their OSS and peacekeeper models in 420 I'm looking for something with a double edge that wont kill my pocket book.

I have owned a kobun and a smaller knife(cant remember model) in the 420 steel and IMO it sucks, big time, trust me you dont want to buy one. It does not hold an edge worth a crap and is VERY soft, even for 420. I have other knives in 420 and they all seem to outperform CS's 420. Spend the extra cash and get the carbon V, it is worth it, i have never had a problem with the carbon V and think it is one of the better carbon steels on the market.

Stay away from the 420 knives! They are cheaper, but that´s for a good reason:they are softer and overall poorer than the other Cold Steel knives that are made of Carbon V or AUS8 steels. Stick to the knives made of Carbon V,AUS8 or San Mai only!

you guys got lemons or I got my hands on some unusually good models. I have an OSS and a UWK. As soon as I got the OSS I went out and chopped down a few 6" sweetgum trees with it. It still shaved afterwards.
After hearing all the negative hype surrounding 420 I wanted to see for myself just how "bad" it really was. I was impressed to say the least.
Unless you plan on chopping nails with it it will perform just fine.

Peace-

it contains enough carbon (0.3%) to form some acicular Martensite crystals, but not enough to be a Martensite steel, With the levels of alloying elements in 420, it would nedd about twice as much Carbon to fit the bill.
I just started a thread on this forum on Martensite.

Woohoo! Now's my chance to chirp in with another blatantly anti-CS statement! ;)

The only reason Carbon V rocks (and, by extension, Cold Steels Carbon V knives) is because they're made by Camillus!

"Anything less would be uncivilized..." - I heard that on a commercial somewhere :p

I am just curious.. How do you know that? It´s hardly something that appears anywhere in Cold Steels catalogs or website.

I know that because we went through the whole Carbon V steel what is it? who makes it? thing about a year ago and some really knowledgable people stepped up and made it clear.

we were also able to determine through highly scientific guessing, speculation, and yes... a little bit of actual testing that Carbon V (at least right now) is 0170-6C!
as to WHAT exactly 0170-6C is... unless you can get in Camillus' trade secrets, nobody knows :D

I do know one thing though... 0170-6C, whatever's in it, is some of the sweetest performing steel on this planet.
