I am new to this forum- Does anyone own the Cold steel 'Bad Axe'? How does it stand up to multiple throws?? It also seems of a similar construction to the 'special forces shovel'. (I would have the same question about the shovel’s durability for throwing)

So I'm making a purchasing decision for CS axes (for throwing purposes) my thinking based on my research norse hawk>(bad axe) >frontier hawk (lightest for throwing purposes)>trail hawk. Ideas/opinions??

Many Thanks!!!

I bought 3 Bad Axes in the mid 90s. I have thrown them 1000s of times with little or no damage. Now, that's not to say that they're indestructable. The handles are wood... I've stuck an axe into another's handle from time to time. Luckily, CS sells replacement handles cheap. So, IMO, if you're looking for something that sticks pretty much every time you throw, the Bad Axe is a LOT of fun for the money.

I found the bad axe I had to be of an inferior quality . Mine was bought in the last couple of years and so might be different than older ones . If mine wasn,t stamped into a form it would just crumple . It was a bit of funto throw for the first day . Then I gave it away .

It just wasn,t quality . Of course it wasn,t that expensive as has been said . If you want something cheap and a bit of fun then it might just be for you .

I would rather have a reasonable quality tomahawk with a hammer poll on the back that is a hoot of fun and a useful camp tool .

I have a trail hawk and it is probably the best tomahawk that i've owned. Excellent for throwing. I, personally, do not like the bad axe very much...somethin about it bugs me

Many thanks for everyone's input!!!:)

What is the use of the hammer poll on the back of an axe besides hammering stuff? Am I missing something? If I am just throwing isn't it kind of 'dead weight'?

So I checked out http://www.crazycrow.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=842-100-000

It seems like there are many of the same designs. If I understand correctly the CS Norse hawk or the The Blackhawk Throwing & Camp Hawk have the highest chance of sticking-correct? Anything different with the 'crazycow stuff' vs. CS. What's with the heart shaped cut out? Any change in blade strength?

Many Thanks!!!

I have both the CS shovel and bad axe. I have never thrown mine but I did sharpen the edges on both. They can take a wicked edge. The special forces shovel is especially inocent looking but wickedly sharp. If you watch the video proof from CS, they do a good job at throwing them. They even hold yearly contests in California to see who is the best thrower.

The hammer poll as suggested is a great all around camp tool . From tent pegs to driving wedges it does it all . If you are not handy or a camper you can do without it until you need one and then you won,t have one . Its not really deadweight when you throw it . I never found a difference unless you get into very heavyweight hawks .

Is the special forces shovel coming that sharp or was that enhanced (i.e. you sharpened it)?:D

I had it sharpened at the local knife shop. They sharpen all my toys, and put a razor edge on it. It comes with a dull edge, but with alittle work you could have a nice utility tool that could easily cut like a knife.

I have the special forces shovel, and my buddy gave me a bad axe for my birthday. I took It camping this year and I have abused this baby to the extreme! I shoveled hot coals, Dug a Trench around my tents, Split small logs to kindling, and threw it into felled tree trunks at least a hundred times. The handle has a few nasty chunks chipped out, fixed with my knife, and some sandpaper. I put a bit of a bend in the rolled foot hold edge when I got a little excited and missed the trunk and hit the granite boulder behind it. the hammer beat it back into reasonable shape. The Special forces shovel did not come with much more than an axe edge out of the box but an hour with my files and a couple of stones got it shaving sharp. This shovel throws so well and is very inexpensive. This Thing Is my favorite purchase in many years. I even made a target in my back yard from a large log and some scrap wood. I now have a new sport Recreational axe/shovel throwing. As for the bad axe. It is just as good as the shovel (and even easier to throw) the wieght and balance is roughly the same as the shovel. So if you throw one well than you can throw the other just as easily. Do yourself a favor and buy the shovel, You can find them online for $16.00. find a thick round of log lumber and make a tripod target out of it. Throw repeat enjoy! I love my shovel and axe.
Tough reliable and very affordable!

Thanks for everyone's input-It's great to get a variety of opinion out there. Please if anyone has had experience with either what are your thoughts?

Thanks

AHA . I guess I didn,t do my research as well as some . I paid 40 bucks for my bad axe . A couple of years back Does that mean it is three times as good ? L:O:L

Ya know if I only paid sixteen bucks I would not have hoped for as much .
You live and you learn .

P:S: funny thing is I paid about sixteen bucks for a cold steel kukuuri machete . Now I enjoy throwing that and I didn,t mind the price . In fact I,m gonna go grab it and do some throwing now .

Does price really affect performance? If you pay $300 for a knife it cut 'real well' + 'cut almost everything easily!' But think you were probably the 1st on your block to have it right---now that's priceless! ;)

16 bucks isn,t far from pocket money . 40 bucks is serious eating money in this household . It doesn,t have much to do with performance . Different strokes for different folks . Enjoy your Bad Axe Benny .
