I would have looked this up with the search function but it's not working, anyhow on with the show...

I like the look of the CS Latin 26" and the Kukri Machetes, but before I go and spend $20 on a knife I have got to know what the BF hive mind has to say, I just gotta!

Are they utter garbage and dangerous to use, or would they be a handy tool around the campsite?

Please don't lead me astray! :D

Like most machetes, they are made of pretty thin stock. They seem well made though. However I can't say I care much for their sheaths. My biggest problem with them is that they apply the black coating AFTER they sharpen the edge. So you will need to do some work on it before you use it.

I have the double edge model. The edge was nonexistant when I got it. A few minutes on the belt sander tool care of that though. The machete works well, especially on light vegetation.

Not real fond of the handles they have, though they are cheap in price. Guess I just prefer the Tramontina's better.

I have a Panga model. The edge needed work when I got it, but with a few swipes of a fine file it was ready to go. It cuts through vegetation and small limbs very well. I can cut through 4" mailing tube like nobody's business. I like the handles, though it could get slippery if you were sweating profusely. I use it as a throwing weapon too. It's got the same spin velocity as my tomahawks. Very fun. For only $8 you can't find a better deal. I'd really like to try the Kukri shaped model as well. The handle material looks a little grippier and it comes with the sheath.

They are just simple cheap, but well-built, no frills machetes made in Africa for the people who use them to survive. I know Cold Steel is getting really bad, but if they chose to market these over the more expensive taiwan- made, non heat treated ones, Get one. I have a Martindale, and my girfriend has a Panga. The panga is good, I prefer Martindale, as the price is close to CS, but seems to be better quality. I would reccomend either.

I got the Kukri Machete last week for yard work but its rained so much I have not had a chance to use it. First impressions are good though, other than the cheap sheath the knife seems well made with a decent edge and a nice comfortable grip. Seems well worth the 18.00 price and the Kukri is the only one that comes with the sheath, the others you have to purchase seporate.
