Cold Steel's SAK knock offs.

I noticed the SAKs knock offs in the last Special Projects cataloge. I was placing an order so I figured I had to see what you get for $5.99. I got the 7 function model. Actually my initial impressions are that it is not bad. The fit and finish are much better than the Chinese SAKs I have seen before. Yes it is made in China, says so on the blade. I tried flexing the blade and it didn't break. I tried to round the philips driver but I couldn't do it with any amount of resonable force. I plan on pushing the knife very hard over the next week or so and see what happens. The steel is by far better than other knock off SAKs, but ofcourse not as good as the real SAKs.

I still think that this is a shameless offering from CS.

P*S* I thought Cold Steel wouldn't resharpen their knives? I have a form that came in the box that says send the knife in along with $7 and they will resharpen it.

I should've been clearer on that. $7 to sharpen any of their knives. I imagine if you want to send the $6 knife in I am sure they would sharpen it for $7. I just put that remark in beacuse I have read tons of posts the say Spyderco will resharpen their knives but Cold Steel won't. Well, Cold Steel WILL!

Last night at work I used the Swiss Steel to cut card board and wittled a small block of wood. So far the edge is holding up quite well. It won't shave but it is sharp enough. The edge also had a little contact with a crome-moly steel shaft in a machine in the form of a good wack. The only damage was a tiny dull spot on the very edge.. The cork screw also does the task, and shows no signs of snapping. The philips and flat head screw drivers show better than modest strength. I have tried prying and over-tightening screws with them they didn't twist or snap. I am becoming a little impressed here. I expected much less for $6

While there are companies which produce multi-blade Swiss Army-like folders, I would have never expected to see Cold Steel produce these copies. What makes it worse is that they call them "Swiss Steel" and display the Swiss cross on them. It's a miracle that Victorinox or Wenger haven't gone after them.

Tanto Master,
As numberthree mentioned, Cold Steel does not sharpen their serrations. This is what people complain about. Although it should be noted that Benchmade won't sharpen serrated knives either.
Spyderco, Benchmade, and many other companies will sharpen their knives free of charge, and Spyderco will sharpen serrations, plain, anything.
$7 to sharpen only the plain edge part of a knife, plus postage? Sounds like a major ripoff to me.

I wasn't aware of that. The form just says resharpen $7. I guess I can count out sending in the old Vaquero Grande for a edge refinish . I got the "Dog Bone" made for Cold Steel's serrations it works pretty well. I haven't had any trouble keeping the edge shaving sharp with it, but I imagine if I broke the teeth off it would require more than the dog bone.

Thanks for the info.

I've always been under the impression that the Swiss government was very active in protecting the idea that Swiss = quality.

I'm actually surprised that they haven't prevented Cold Steel from bastardizing their name and flag in this manner.

If Seiko was making a Japanese watch called the "Swiss Quartz" or something I'd expect them to get sued quick.

WWW.LTSPECPRO.COM Click the "Folding Knives" Link. Then look for the "Swiss Steel" link.

So far I am finding it to be a decent knife, it doesn't have the fit and finish of the originals as expected, but it is much better than other Chinese made SAK's that I have seen. Also I think it is well suited for a useable and losable knife. I am really good at losing knives on camping trips so these are pretty good for me.
