Recently got a surprize package from Lyn Thompson of Cold Steel. It's a two volume set that has a wonderful title The Fighting Tomahawk. Hmmnn, where have I heard that before. Since I don't write negative reviews the fact that I'm taking the time to mention it here should tell you something. I was very plesently surprized with the content, presentations, and above all the subject matter. These DVD do a really good job explaining the basics and generally tracks with some of the material in my book by the same name. The approach to footwork and stances is a bit different than what I've taught but it certainly is very workable and accomplishes all the tasks really well. One unique aspect it the use of the Hawk in a reverse grip. Honestly, I had never really thought much about this but the way Lyn and his team pitch it certainly demonstrates it's potential. There is a lot of emphasis on the thrust or 'punch' as I call. I was particularly impressed with the disruption techniques. The throwing segiment is very good but I would have liked to have seen some more of the close range throws and maybe some of those distance throws from say 50 feet. Mike Sastre and I had talked a bit about doing a Tomahawk DVD but now that this is out I will probably just promote this one for the basics and get on with some other approach with the weapon. As with many Cold Steel videos Lyn does an excellent job demonstrating the cutting & punching capabilities of the Cold Steel line on Cow skull, and assortment of meat. Another interesting segiment shows how the current catalog hawks can be modified to fit both the modern and historic user. I enjoyed watching these DVDs. I don't know what they are going for, but if you are looking for a great lesson go-by to teach the Tomahawk basics, they are for you. Even if you are not a Cold Steel fan, you need to give these DVDs a look. It will be worth your time.
