Anyone use a neoprene mask/half mask or something else when the temps dip outside?

These things look awesome. They humidify the air you inhale after exhaling, dissipate the CO2, and have some kind of filter. The nose looks like it would be uncomfortable though. Any opinions on the Underarmor cold weather stuff?

I at one time used a polypropylene US-made balaclava that I got for around 10 bucks in an Army surplus store.

Really really nice item to have when outside in windy winter air. With that on my face, I would take long walks in -40 wind chills in MN. Makes you look like a bank robber, but your face is nice and toasty. :):)

Either of you'se guys got pics of these things?

Look in to Buff
Many people see them as silly, but I've been using these things for about two years now in freezing temperatures, and they work very well.
They are extremely versatile, and wick moisture from your forehead if you manage to sweat while working.

I just use a basic balaclava with a big oval exposing eyes, nose, mouth. Mine is a pretty old handmade one from my Great Aunt, and can pull up over the mouth and nose if needed, or roll the whole bottom up to just cover the top of my head.

I got this one last year. The fold down thingy can stay up under the hat or come down over the face. It's pretty toasty and it covers my ears.

I do. Though I make sure it has a fleece lining. Comfy. Don't interfer w/ brim hats. Folds into a pocket.

I've been using my Recon Wraps from Spec-Ops Brand.

I just got a Duluth Trading gaiter that works even better: it is velcro adjustable, shaped for the face and to cover the throat, stops the wind.

Kind of depends on what you're doing and just how cold you're going to be...

I use a regular fleece balaclava when riding my bike; it seems good down to around the mid-20s. There is a problem with heavy breathing....If you cover your nose then your breath shoots up and fogs your specs.... If you don't wear specs no problem.

Neoprene is seriously warm. My wife gave me a "gator skins" head/ear band years ago. I took it out for a ride with temps in the mid-20s and sweat was rolling out from under the thing....
Likely would be OK if you were not doing some form of exertion. I've got neoprene socks as well, you're supposed to wear them over your regular socks and under the cycling shoes.... Again, only necessary for temps way colder than I would consider riding in.

....

I wear specs and struggle with this problem all the time whenever it gets really cold. I currently use a neck gaiter made of windproof polar fleece by Seirus that can be pulled over the nose but I'm thinking of trying one of those neoprene masks that fit closer over the nose so that exhaled air doesn't fog my glasses.

There is a brand called Serius Innovation that makes some decent neoprene masks. I don't really care for the neoprene masks. Too restrictive. When I'm skiing I usually just wear a Turtle Fur necker on cold days.

fleece balaclava from Cabelas. I've tried neoprene, extremely uncomfortable with a beard.
