Cold-Weather Gloves....

...what gloves would you recommend for cold weather? Temp level is from 15* to 40*f. Not looking for mittens... Need finger dexterity.
 
Do they need to be water proof?
Should they be abrasion resistant(i.e. not fleece or other soft material)?
 
Not knowing how long you are going to be exposed, I offer these two suggestions:

1. Military issue leather work gloves with wool inserts. They last, and the wool liners can be changed (from the thicker, older issue green, to the newer, thinner brown). I still have the same set I was issued 18 years ago.

2. If you are going to be stationary for extended time periods, use any sort of mitten......much better for over all hand warmth. If you need to get a little more dexterity, go for "trigger finger mittens". You should be able to find old surpluss ones fairly easy.
