I haven't been able to get out as much as I would like this winter...too much work and not enough hours in the day, and then we have had a lot more rain this winter than usual. But I finally got out for an afternoon and evening for some peace and quiet.

Plenty of water to be found right now.

You can see where at one point the stream overflowed and split in two for a time.

and it's plenty cold...

Cold enough to have me looking into new compasses. I need one that isn't liquid dampened for winter travels, but also doesn't weigh a lot...

Lots of squirrels scampering around eating berries

Not much of a canopy these days

But still some green to be seen with all of the moss, hollies, and ferns

I've been on a stainless kick the last few years, and primarily CPM S35VN, so I wanted to check out the new mid-tech version of the Duke model from Fiddleback Forge now that it is available. I have liked the other mid-tech models so far but have been looking forward to one bigger than the Bushfinger but smaller and lighter than the Camp Knife for woods wandering. I like the balance of this model very much, it handles like an extension of my own arm.

I am glad they have started adding the hidden lanyard holes to the larger models. This style of lanyard hole keeps the cord out from between the handle and your hand when using a rearward grip for chopping cuts, which helps when I need to clear brier vines out of my way.

The Duke did a fine job of turning a section of smoked pork belly into bacon. I could slice it thin if I wanted, but I buy it this way because I prefer my bacon a little on the thick side :)

Then when the sun started setting it was time to head in. I saw a few turkeys in the distance and a couple of deer. The deer knew I was there but the sun in her eyes kept her from spotting me for a couple of minutes.

You had me at bacon, and some nice, thick slabs of it! Great pics as usual Mist.

Thanks man. Yeah, it's like a 4 hour round trip to go get the bacon that way, but I buy quite a bit when I am up there so it's worth it. When it is smoked like that it has a lower moisture content and shrinks less too :)

Good post Mist. I want to go hunting with you!:)

Thanks Hawkeye. Lol, I've noticed I don't see as much wildlife when I take someone along. Seems for whatever reason I talk less when I'm alone, so I'm much quieter :D By myself I have sat and gotten so off into my own thoughts I've had hen turkeys walk right up on me with their young, and then come unglued when they notice me :)

good stuff. thanks for sharing.

Thanks man, glad you liked it.

Digging that Fiddleback big time, how's edge retention?

It's doing great so far, I've chopped through some pretty hard seasoned hickory and maple with no serious dulling and noticeable signs of edge flattening at all.

Turkey, venison, bacon sandwich -all it needs is some tomato + lettuce !
That balance point is exactly where it should be for that type of knife .Excellent steel !!!
Works , don't it ???

Thanks for the great photos in the woods. I've been considering a Fiddleback in S35VN. I like that lanyard hole on the Duke.

FWIW, I usually have two compasses. One is usually a non-liquid-filled A-30. It's plain, simple, and light, and I haven't noticed any problems with them.

Another great thread that has made me hungry.

Thanks man, I guess I still have it even if I haven't been around as much :)

I couldn't believe I ran off and left the bread and other stuff behind...I had to suffer through with just extra bacon. My taste buds were fine with it, not sure about my arteries though...

So far it is work very well. I love the balance point, it feels very natural in use. I really like CPM S35VN a lot for my environment. I still have a few carbon steel knives I really like a lot, but more and more my go-to knives for field use as S35VN. I have done a fair bit of chopping in seasoned hickory and maple to test the edge retention and I am very pleased with the heat treat.

Nice day you had there.

Yes it was thanks, and a break I reeeeally needed!

Thanks man, I am glad you liked the post. I am very fond of this steel, and am very gad to see the mid-techs available in this steel. It's one of my favorite steels and Andy only made a few of the hand made knives in it so they are rare and pricey when you run across them.

Yes, I almost always have a back up compass in my match safe, but I like the mirrored sighting compasses for the mirror as well. I ordered a Brunton Tru-Arc 20, so I'll see how that one does next trip.
