I don't have the Cold Steel and don't know the price point. But you cannot go wrong with a real KaBar. My USMC is razor sharp and has been proven time and time again.

I mean tough enough to stay sharp for a quite a long time!
Already have several knives made from 1095, they are tough allright!

You CANNOT go wrong with a KA-BAR. I trusted my life with one nearly every day in the Corps and don't know one Marine in the entirety of the Corps that doesn't own, use, and love at least one. I STRONGLY urge you to go for the KA-BAR. Just my .02. :D

Battle Tested.
Marine Approved. ;)

Hai Jeff,

SOG Field Knives looks really good. I hope to find one of the BG-42 versions. For now I will focus on the KA-BAR, hope to ad this one to my collection soon.

Ka-Bar is offering a couple of other fixed blades you should look at.
The new 7 1/2" heavy bowie and the KBD1 combat / fighter designed by Dozier.

I'm a total SOG fan, so the recommendation of their Field Knife w/ BG-42 steel certainly makes me smile nice & big. I've owned one and it's a great knife, my pal now has it for safekeeping.

As for Kabar, yessir, there's nothing wrong with Kabar. I had the recent privilege of sending 5 of 'em to the troops overseas, 3 of 'em to these folks for further transfer:

SOG or Kabar, can't go wrong !!!

Cheers,

I made my mind up and for now.. I will go for the KA-BAR, which model is the best?
I am also looking for the SOG Field Knives and hope to find the the BG-42 version.

What about the Cold steel knives? looks like CS owners are rare up here!

The Ka-bar isn't a bad knife. I can't speak for the Military model but I will tell you that the the Cold Steel SRK is a lot better than both.

Hi Lobo,

I just read an artical about the Cold Steel SRK.

Survival/Rescue operations demand a versatile knife able to withstand extreme abuse. The SRK was designed with this in mind. No expense was spared in steel, heat treatment, and construction. The blade has a rich black epoxy powder coat to help protect the Carbon V steel from the elements. The 3/16" thick blade features a strong clip point that’s hand honed to a superb edge that is hair flinging sharp. The SRK's handle sports a single quillion finger guard and a deeply checkered grip.

The specifications look great:

Blade: 6"
Handle: 4 3/4"
Overall: 10 3/4"
Thick: 3/16"
Weight: 8.2oz.
Sheath: Secure-Ex

What exactly is Carbon V steel?

Regards.

stick with kabar....one tough knife

IMPORTANT........make sure you buy one from kabar itself.... the other companies that sell usmc knives are nowhere near as good

I own two CS folders (Recon 1 and a Zytel Ti-Lite) and a Recon Scout fixed blade. I like 'em all. The Recon Scout is worth looking into IMO. Somebody will post a link to the monster-thread where one broke, but keep in mind that you can break any knife. I've had no problems with any of my CS knives.

like just about everyone else has said... my vote is on the Ka-Bar anyday. Mine has seen a lot of action as a heavy utility/camping knife (not as much since I got my Camillus PSK... sometimes five inches is better than seven) and it has never let me down. It'll take and hold an edge through all the abuse you can hand it.

On top of it all, it's just a pretty knife... especially after you handle it enough for the leather to age and darken.

About the SRK...do a search on it here at BF that's all I'm gonna say  ... Like I said before the KA-BAR is your best bet. I have the model 1211 but there are a plethora that are similar and just as wonderful performance wise. And Bill's got it, unless you've got a PX that you can get to order from an AUTHORIZED dealer like these guys...

Smoky Mountain Knife Works

...or order directly from KA-BAR. Happy Hunting! :D

I've heard lots of opinions on who makes the best kabars. I've heard every opinion: Kabar, Camillus, Ontario. When was the last time Kabar had the military contract?

Joe

The Marine Corps still issues KA-BAR's; I got out a year or so ago, and those that were issued were KA-BAR. OH, and the new Marine Corps bayonets, KA-BAR! SO, they've never lost it in the first place. The answer to your question Joe is NOW. :D
