Hi guys, i would like your knowledges to find out what is going on with coldsteel voyagers. Before a month i purchased a coldsteel large voyager with clip point plain edge blade, i noticed that on the one side of the blade was written the coldsteel logo and on the other was writen VOYAGER VG-1 STAINLESS. Yesterday i purchased an other one the same as the first (the first i gave it to my brother) and i noticed that the blade now is writting on the first side the logo COLD STEEL and on the other side is writting VOYAGER Made in Japan. Both knives i was told that were 2007 products. Can anybody of you tell me if something is wrong with these knives? are both genuine? is it any of these fake?

Current, right-now Voyagers are VG-1, i believe. Before that the Voyagers were AUS 8. And I think maybe before that the Voyagers were Carbon V. They're all decent IMO.

Same family, but the uncle no one talks about. Difference between VG1 and VG10 is like between AUS4 and AUS10- in other words, a huge amount.

Not true.

....................VG1....................VG10
C..............0.95-1.05............0.95-1.05
Si...............<0.50....................<0.60
Mn...... ......<0.50....................<0.50
P........ ......<0.03....................<0.03
S........ .....<0.01....................<0.03
Cr...........13.00~15.00.......14.50~15.50
Mo..............0.2-0.4..............0.9-1.20-
Co................ ...................1.30-1.50
V.................... ....................0.10-0.30

VG1 has no cobalt or vanadium. It has less moly and a bit less chrome. It has the same amount of Carbon.
This is NOT like the difference between AUS4 and AUS 10. It is more like the difference between 440C and VG10.

and what do you suggest? VG-1 or AUS-8?

I have no hands-on experience with VG-1. VG-1 blades are only now appearing in stock on the web stores I use.

My SWAG, based only on the compositions, is that the AUS8 will take a finer edge and sharpen more easily, but that the VG-1 will hold an edge longer. But a lot is going to depend on the two heat treats. And what heat treat is used, and how well it is performed is unknown.
