so i have had this stove for YEARS. never failed and has enough BTU's to lift a small hot air balloon. HOWEVER, to my dismay, they do not sell the powermax fuel canisters anymore.:mad:... for years i had used this alot and thank gosh i stocked up on some and now have 2.5 canisters left. granted they made an adapter in order for the Exponent to use the other crappier coleman fuel but thats $27!! f'ing insane... the canisters now are going on Ebay for up to $30 PER 300gram CAN!!!! Why doesnt Coleman realize they goofed by taking this fantastic system off the market?? i am super pissed. i do not want another light weight burner and i do not want to pay $30 for a can of fuel nor do i want to pay for the dang adapter!! pissed!

after these canisters are used up i dunno what to do. i am tempted to just get another newer hiking lightweight stove but to part with that Exponent will be hard to do. the fuel mix and the Xpert really really really kicked a lot of ass in the woods especially in high wind.

does anything come close? perhaps i need some suggestions on the replacement (still up in the air whether or not to buy the adapter and just use the newer coleman fuels.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: nothing beats the powermax fuels.

this is the review

That is one of the reasons I have stuck with my old msr whisperlite, with a 500ml bottle it may add a little more bulk and weight but cheaper to run, easier to find fuel, and bombproof. If it is a dayhike the bottle will only be half full.
I do not like canister stoves when it gets below 0 either.
Plus if it is an actual emergency and you need a fire asap due to injury or soaked wood the fuel comes in handy.

the coleman above works in -20F . anyway. i may go the MSR route. the fuel used to be cheap but since coleman quit making the fuel canisters (powermax) the prices skyrocketed for them bc a lot of folks still use the Exponent X and are willing to pay 30 bucks a can... rediculous.

btw the coleman is bombproof too. its been a fantastic stove. just expensive to run it unless i get the adapter.

I did not know that Coleman had discontinued the Powermax cannisters. I knew several people who owned and liked the system. I bet they are POd as well. How about posting a WTB ad on this and other forums?

i have thought about that but i ASSume it would still sell for the same price as what you can find on ebay. pissed! i truly believe it was the BEST rough weather hiking stove.. i love it

Try the clearance shelves at The Sports Authority. That's where I orignally bought my Xpert stove from and some stores (at least here in NJ) still have a few 300g cans and most have them marked down from $7 to $4 or less. I check every Sports Authority I come across and have been able to stockpile 10 cans. They're worth their weight in gold at this point.
Like you, I love this liquid-feed stove- the ease of use (no pressurizing and re-pressurizing, no spills), the extreme cold-weather reliability, the high output, and the versatility when you add the optional fuel adapter (despite its outrageous cost). You can get still get the adapter from campmor.com for $26 and I'd recommend doing so before they too get scarce and get relegated to eBay at $50 or more!
I wish I had gotten the 2-burner Xpert when they started marking that down too. I'm looking for a maintenance kit now to ensure my Xpert continues to work well into the future.

For what you are using it for, (I have no experience with the Xpert, just the older eXponent multifuel) the new MSR whisperlight universal might be right up your alley. Basically you get the bomb-proofness and multi-fuel abilities of the whiperlite international, with the ability to run gas canisters either upright, or inverted (for colder weather). That way you are using a canister type that is very common across several companies. the whisperlites are not the greatest in wind, they do need a dedicated wind screen in most conditions, (but they are also more efficient with the reflectiveness of the windscreen)
Something to keep in mind anyway if you want to go that route.

The OP was apparently banned back in June. He won't read your suggestions.

You know, I've been around long enough, I should check for that kind of thing..... just didn't this time. Well if anyone else has the same question, and by some miracle uses the search, then they will know. I should have also noticed the necro-post is 5 months in the ground.

No worries. Hung Solo had been around quite a while and didn't seem a bad sort. I didn't know he had been banned either til I opened this and saw the epitaph under his name. I don't know why he was banned, but that doesn't happen without a good reason.

Speaking of adapters... I could use one myself... for a different coleman stove, the Max Micro. I understand that someone used to make adapters to remote locate the current gas cylinders from underneath those stoves and others similar using the 3250-702T 250g cylinder as a base.

That's the only reason I didn't much like the coleman gas stoves, they don't like being standard, save the ones that use full size tanks. It's funny though, since not too long ago a buddy of mine bought a full re-build seal and pump kit for an older two burning liquid stove from way back. (60-70s?) and I've seen every size of glass and mantel for the lanterns. Who's to know how they think.
My concern with using adapters and tanks is knowing if you need vapor or liquid from the tank. need vapor and get liquid, potential big boom.

Since I don't intend to invert the cannister, I haven't given that much consideration. I've been using a home made foil heat deflector to keep the cylinder cool when using my oven on the stove, and putting the oven up on legs to keep it unenclosed by the oven. But it loses a lot of heat that way.

Right, I remember that thread. Not sure what would be lighter as a heat shield. in your case, getting the can out from under the oven would be worth while.
