Howdy folks!

I was perusing the internet looking for a cheap wool blanket to keep with a 'minimalist' pack and found this little guy, and thought you gents might find it interesting:

Just an insulated, waterproof blanket that can also be used as a poncho. I'm not too big a fan of the fleece lining, I don't like it when that stuff gets wet. Also looks like it might be too big to be worth much as far as getting it into a small pack. Interesting, none the less.

That does look very useful, but I hear ya on the fleece. If your looking for a wool blanket, why not go for a military surplus?

Yea, that's what I've been thinking. The lowest price I've found for one so far is around $15, but I think I can do a little better.

I'm really hunting for about anything that will keep me comfortably warm (along with a fire) so I don't have to lug a sleeping bag with me next time it's chilly. I hate carrying the sleeping bag almost as much as a tent (gave up on those too).

I have one of the Coleman poncho/blankets. I keep it in the van. Works as a pillow, seat cushion at sporting events or when ground hunting, blanket, you name it.

It isn't exactly small. When its rolled up (maybe 14"w X 12"h X 6"d) in the attached pouch.

Using the pouch as a hood is a joke. Its too big and there is no draw string or anything to keep it from falling over your face. Maybe if you wore a hat with a visor. Its probably why the website has a pic of a guy wearing it as a poncho but without the "hood" up.

with it rolled up in the pouch, there is room inside for other items so it could be used as bag/tote of sorts, but if it rains and you need a poncho, you'll need someplace else to put your gear that was in the bag.

I like the one I have but I consider it more of a comfort item than a camping/survival item. Great in the park and as a vehicle emergency blanket but I don't take it afield much. A good effort on Coleman's part but a dedicated wool blanket and a small poncho might still be the way to go.

HTH,

Chris

Thanks much for the review! That confirms some suspicions. I found a wool blanket for $12 at campingsurvival.com (and a few other things I just couldn't resist) so I'll probably go with that.

Might work in a pinch as an additional liner for the ol' USGI poncho sleep system.

What do you guys like better a G.I. poncho with liner or the poncho and a G.I. wool blanket? and why?

I love my wooby! (poncho liner)

the poncho liner can be rolled up very small, but isn not as warm as wool.

I need to buy another poncho liner for my pack... 'cause mine keeps gettin stolen for couch duty and catnaps and stuff.

I agree, they're comfy and warm, not for 0 degrees of course.
