In 2007 Colin Paterson fully customized two 296Y trappers. One in stag and one in paua (abalone). Here are the links to his site about the knives:

It seems that these two were both re-sold recently on ebay. I was lucky enough to score the stag one. Did anyone else here land the Paua one? I'd love to compare notes.

The deal just went down and I haven't received the knife yet but I will scan it thoroughly when I do and post the pics.

This knife just arrived after more than a month of wait time and I really like it! Colin Paterson did an all-round fine job :thumbup:. The filework style very much reminds me of Bill Ruple's work and since I had to sell the only Ruple I had :(, this is filling that void nicely. It's not a hand-made knife but it's a fine hand-made customization of a classic pattern and it's most definitely a USA Schrade.

Colin Paterson stated that hand-polishing these blades to a mirror finish was extra labor intensive and I'm sure the filework had to be very carefully done as well. The brass liners work well against the white stag and filed springs. I sure like the extra-fat natural stag he chose for the handles and all-in-all this has to be up there as one of my nicest Schrade knives. A lot of effort went in to this one. I'm driven to carry and use this knife so it gets seen more often but mirror-polished becomes scratched-to-hell all too easily so I'm going mull that over for a while. I wonder if I could get another one made after all? ;)
