Collectability? Vs Desireability ?

well to me the above are not the same...
as of now i have to decide on one or the other in my collection...
it occured to me that i would not be the only one wandering at times
which to let go ... like marrying off kids or selling puppies ...

for instance i have one with the date mark it should have and
a dup with a date mark a year ahead that is most likely is a salesman or art blade ....

one with a custom stamp and one with the date mark of when it was issued a year earlyer...

one with an error that should not have left the factory and one as issued...

one as issued and one that was an employees knife that was never issued in that configuration....

I kinda know my preferance's but what of you other collectors?
what do you think more:
valuable ?
desireable ?
collectable ?
and what diffrences in as issued or not as issued would you pay more for ?
one that was issued in brass wood or one diff in nickel or stag / horn / other?
basicly do you want the odd one that is not standard ?
would you look for an odd one if you knew it was out there?
would you pay more for an odd one?
i thank you for your time and imput answers to these burning questions...

Dave,
I go for whatever I desire. Not Value or collectibilty. If its one I like or want I buy it, just because I like it or want it.
If there are odd ones out there, I do like to get those, but they are few and far between. I would pay more for a one of a kind also but so does everyone else :D So I usually wind up with the production model :) Hope this makes sense.

All I can say is that my collection/ accumulation is,,,uh,,,,,well,,,eclectic....::cool: :D

I tend to go after what I find desireable. For now, I am hooked on PCKS knives, which appeal to my sense of quality, value and usefulness. As well, I like a good variety of steel, all of which can be found at 'Pete's'.

Whatever strikes my fancy, that I purchase. I actually have zero need for any more knives. The addiction is well placed and rooted firmly. Someone needs to address the issue of knife collecting as being an addiction, but for now I'll just look around for yet another piece of steel to buy.

yes as a folding hunter collection mine is some what eclectic...
yet of what i have seen of yours
[diverse as yours is and taken in its entirety]
is more of the best of unrelated Bucks then mine covering the entire spectrum of Bucks past offerings...
yet when i say value - i am not refering to price...
rather as a standard issue compared to a one off of the theam of the blade..
that makes it a simple question of which would my brothers reather have in there prized collections ... :p
or
yo dudes ~ which ones does ya likes more-better?
the standard flaver or someting diff from what all the others gots?:D ;)

quite muchly you seem to understand better the thoughts i am trying to gather from all of you sharp edge steel nuts ;)
again
i am not refering to the monatary worth jest
which do you want (value ?) more? odd or like the rest ...
rember a one off is not worth more unless there is some one ELSE that wants it more then you...:foot:
a one of ten is more valuable then one of one per insurence companys
one of one no one else can have one like it so there is nothing to compare its dollar worth to ....
one of ten well it can be gotten it is jest a mater of price..

Dave, I'm leaning towards Jims thoughts on wanting & buying. If I want it, I'll buy it. I love mint knives, but have a lot of old users in my collection. All Bucks are collectible, so I limit my scope to the reality of my budget, and if it fits into an existing collection, because I know I can't have all of them.
The most valuable knife is the last one I need to fill out a display or a set.
I look at "one of a kinds" and prototypes as bonus's to a collection, don't need them, but they're always nice to have, especially if the price is right.

I collect what appeals to me, it doesn't matter if it's a 1 of 100 or 1 of 1 million if I like it and can afford it I'll buy it. One thing I do like in my 110's is rivets, I'm not much of a fan of the naked ones. Future monetary value is not a consideration, I buy to enjoy not invest.

I have slowly drifted towards Buck Limited Edition Custom folders. I guess the emphasis would be 110 folding hunters, model 532s, with a knight or squire thrown in for good measure. Cannot forget the Mayo or the new little neck knife of s30v. However, "eclectic" is the word for my meager collection, also. Take care, Rob

yes i and most of us buy as a i like i want ...i collect mainly with out reguard to boxes and paper work... it is the knives not the stuff ,,,
yet i do find i will bid more on one with the stuff if only as a i wont always be here knolage from 3 heart atacks... so some resale value does comein to consitertiation,,,

with your collection would you rather find oddities in a standard box at a hunting store?
have more diffrent limited issues or more of a limited issue?
example :
30 limited diffrent issues of less then 500
or
10 limited issues of 2000 each?
some thing more or less folling a theam like decations to tall tail foke lore leagons like texas pete or john henery?
m more radical limited issues or
more verations of what is there already?

more verations of user knives or
new style knives
i know this is close to a usless sunday thread but it is things i was wandering of concerening thoese of you that may want to display at a show some time...
i certently never envisioned 2 years ago going to show off at at show but i am glad i did the experance was worth it belive you me!
so i am wander ing what would trip your trigers out there?

jest following a train thought that is stuck in my head ....
as in what would blow their hats off?

My collection is pretty much limited to what I find online as there aren't to many knife sellers around here. A couple of things I do look for is rivets and nice scales or a etching that I like. I won't buy a knife just because I don't have that particular one in my collection (yet), but who knows what I'll buy in the future my collection is quite small still.
The only one I have that can be called an oddity I guess is a standard with a rear tang stamp which was my first 110 which started the addiction.

my "addiction" started with a deer profile cut out still have it too...
before that they were jest good useing knives that i had a lot of laying around.... :D ;)
yea none of this is realy about money or what we spend!!!..
i am trying to get a feel on how to define jest what makes a buck knife
desirable or collectable to other nuts like me... and what diffrences we have ..

in other words what are some of the directions of the addiction?
and what would make it worse ....

I collect about 50 different model numbers. Once I got all the production versions of these knives I started to collect product variations within these model numbers. I have both the "Normal" version and as many variations as I can find - prototypes, tang stamp variations, spin offs, material variations, Customs, etc. I'm not just limiting myself to the production versions because I collect the Special Project variations as well. I keep the normal version to contrast it to the variants. For example, I just found a Master Series 110 with the tang stamp reversed on the blade. If I get around to displaying these knives I will put them side by side to show the variation. As far as paying more for the variation, that is usually up to the seller. If the seller knows they have a variant or in a bid situation if the buyers know it is a variant I may well wind up paying more for the knife but often not because many of the variations are not well known in the market. I generally buy what I want but once I start going after a particular variant I will by it if I like it or not.

Well Dave,

At first thought on your question......I buy what I like (when I can). Like Jim said I go for what I desire at the moment!!!! Then I took a look at the display case's on the wall.....out of the 80 knives in veiw only 7 are regular production knives (4 of those were gifts). Unlike those of you who "only collect 110's" there are 20 different models in the display's. So...it would seem that I go for the limited edition/spechial run knives. I'm not in this addition to turn a prophet one day...it's just a plane old addition...I can't get enough of these things...LOL. However, Dave I will pay more for a perceved hole in my collection....those darn emotions get the best of me at times and I pay more than I should....Oh well thats part of the fun at least for me.

I have to go with a good number of people here. If I like it and can afford it I get it. No particular reason.;)

this was a verry good answer

Actually I do love the cut outs, seeing them would definately make the addiction worse :D

another fine pair of answers!!! this is what i am looking for!!!

Yea ! this is good to know..
....I'm not much of a fan of the naked ones. Future monetary value is not a consideration, I buy to enjoy not invest.

so guys tho i can not properly frame the question so that each of you would know what i am seeking the above answers are the type of information i am looking for!!!
i did not want to say - i like BNR or hate TRP2 or if it is about XYZ i will buy it...
the above is the type of information if i were at the table with you that i would like to know from you !!!!!!!!...
the most common thread so far is it is not the value to others ...
so i know you are not dealers as that is the first thing dealers think of!!! what is it worth to some one else!! can i make a buck off it ...

i like some things with rivets some with out stag yes / ivory yes and no / horn no / rocker pin no most any time it is not wood /
nickel with any dark scale/ brass with some light /
most any etch / etch seriers of 3 to 5 yes very much /
gold etch yes to all
high production issues in a set over 4 years yes
low issues of 500 or less not in a set ...
photo etch of companys not generly but some exceptions for elaborate ones..

these are answers i would give to my questions
what are yours! ?
