Collectible?

About a year or so ago I purchased the 1 of 500 first production run Buck TacLight. Later, I was told by a dealer that this was a "mistake", and that Buck maintains a collection of the "First" knives produced. Is this true? If so, is there any interest in this knife from Buck or the Buck collectors? I have kept the origional box and papers, and the knife is in mint condition. It lives in my Gerstner chest. My interest is primarily in handmade knives, so I might be willing to part with it. Any information would be appreciated, thanks.

Steve,
Many times, when Buck introduces a new product, they mark the first batch "1st Production Run". The quantity of this run varies but 500 is a popular number. Buck tries to hold on to one of each new knife it designs for its museum.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Joe. Maybe I wasn't perfectly clear, mine is #1 of 500 ! It seems to be the knife that was used in the photos, etc. Does Buck have any interest in this particular knife? The dealer where I purchased it is Country Knives in Intercourse, PA. They're fairly reputable, and the owner seemed suprised when I told him HE sold me the knife!:footinmou

P.S. He told me to contact you, specifically, but I lost the @#&%* number:o

Hi Steve,

Sorry, but if your knife is marked like this:

1st Production Run
1 of 500

Then it is just that, one of the run of 500 knives that were ALL etched the same. All Buck knives that I have seen that were actually serialized were engraved with the serial number like this:

1/500

For example, my large Strider/Buck folders are both from the first run of 500. The tanto is marked "1st Production Run 1 of 500" and the spear point is marked "346/500 1st Production Run." So the tanto is just one of the first 500 (could be the first or the last in the run) but the spear point is actually serialized so I know it was the 346th one produced in that run of 500 knives.

Hope I haven't confused you too badly. ;)

P.S. Just looked in my knife roll and I do have a 885 Taclite marked 1 of 500. Strange how a 110 collector accumulates so many non-110 Buck knives! :)
