Collecting folders

I have never been a folder fan, most of mine are fixed blades. My collection at present is about 20 which includes 3 folders, but just because they went with the series of my fixed blades.
Well...now I would like to add some folders, not for value, but just to give people an idea of what Schrade made and what we have now lost to history.
I would like to add maybe 15 or so, and to include different handle material, blade types, scrimshaw and non knife items such as tools.
BUT.... since I have never really looked at folders, I know little about them, as to which models would be good to add to collection.
Any sugestions on which ones would be a good variation of years of production?

For sheer variety, go with the open stock. Jigged Delrin, bone, and cell. Gents knives, UH and OT styles. Lockbacks, stockman pattern, so much to choose from.

I like the older Schrade Cut Co's, but they are harder to find in mint shape.

I would say an example from Uncle Henry, Old Timer, Frontier, 3rd Generation, open stock SW, open stock SCC, the scrimshaw series, etc.

Try a look at the huge variety pictured here:

Have fun collecting!

Great advice from Glenn.

We had a thread last year, of us choosing what three knives would best represent Schrade. It was fun. I'll try and find it.

Thanks for the info. I see some I think are great, also will wait and hope for the post about the three knives.

OK, here are my 3 personal favorite, must have Schrades:

1- A 197UH, Cat's Paw. A sweet linerlock blade that fits my hand like it was designed for it. It is so sweet that I will even overlook the fact that it is stainless steel.
2- A 61OT, Slim Premium Stock. There has to be a stockman in the mix and this is my favorite.
3- A 152OT Sharpfinger. It can skin a deer or elk with no problem. Nothing says "Schrade" better than a Sharpie, and there should be a fixed blade in the mix (IMHO).

What do the rest of you choose?

I'll give some different suggestions from what I did last year. One knife, several versions. Shop wisely and you can have something that will hold it's value- or increase in over the coming years.

8OT.. Actually, you could have fun just finding different versions of this one.

1...The standard sawcut delrin handled Old Timer, but make it one of the fancy blade etched- fancy shield- 'compliments of Schrade' issues. Or, perhaps the 'Keen Kutter' blade etched issue.

2... one of the many Ivory delrin handled Scrimshaws (make sure it is one with the art by Frank Giorgianni). One of this year's official forum knives hand scrimmed by Mr. Frank would be great.

3... A wood handled version with the Ducks Unlimited Logo etched blade and shield.

4... The AG Russell 'Kentucky Rifle' commemorative. The knife that started commemoratives in a big way.

Have fun.

I'd have to add a 6OT to the list as they should be pretty easy to come by at fair prices today.

I am going through a bit of a nostalgic period, (something about middle age) and would like to have a few knives that my grandfather would have carried. There seem to be quite a few Schrades on the market still. Any thoughts on the quality of their last knives vs looking for more vintage pieces?

As far as I'm concerned, the quality was always there right till the end. It's after they shut down that "things" started to happen. All the raw knife parts went out, and alot were "assembled" together by other companies. Do they say Schrade on them? Sure, but the fit and finish might be off.

IMO, as long as you can identify a pre 2004 piece, you are getting good quality. As a collector of the more "vintage" pieces, I would give the older ones a big

I'm willing to bet those odd ball mix matched knives will fetch a premium one day. Interesting pieces.

Phil,
Don't forget the original 8OT in bone..
Wish I had one of those myself.
