I'm not financially strapped to the point where I need to scrounge powdered metal, but I am frugal. But I do like to be efficient. I put a magnet near by grinder while I'm working to collect the dust so I don't have to breathe it and then wonder about saving the dust that collects on the magnet to use in my canister Damascus projects. What do you think? It's a byproduct, I got plenty of it, why not use it? Is there something special about the powder size and shape or whatever that you buy? Thanks for your help

The material will be heavily oxidized and I don't think it’s worth anything. Carbon burns off so you won't know how much carbon you'll end up with either.

Anything more than simple carbon steels will just get worse.

Most here will recommend you start with new material.

I haven't bought any in years, but I imagine the price is still reasonable. Try finding a source close to you for shot blasting media. It used to be close to O1 for composition. It comes in several sizes as far as amount in a bag and the diameter of the shot.
Make sure you find out the composition so you can better judge th heat treatment.
