Collecting Method
I did not know what else to call my question.

How did you start collecting?
What do you collect?
Do you collect by pattern or by maker?
When did you start with customs?

I started with three medium stockmans, Case yellow in CV, MooreMaker, and a Queen in delrin.
When I saw the difference in the quality of both F&F, and the steel,I went to Queen.
I really like D2 so that is a factor in buying.
For most of the Queens, I use Cumberland as my dealer.

I have number of less expensive stockmans, Buck, Schrade, Boker, Camilius Tobacco Cut and Henkel.
Then Queen in many patterns, more in Amber bone (with help from Bill).
I don't spend more than 55 on a knife. (except a Canal coming).

Method?

No one told me about any method....

well, shoot...guess I'll have to start over....

In all honesty most of the time I see something I like I buy it if it is reasonable. I buy to make me happy, not anyone else. I am partial to Barlow patterns but I never know what I will buy next most of the time.

I collect enough to keep up with Riad's collection ;)

Honestly, I just buy whatever suits my fancy at the given moment.

So what to call it????
Give me a name and I will change the question!!!

and I've just given you a reason to start over!!!!

I'm pretty much on the same rudderless ship as Campbell. Let's just call it eclectic. ;)

A number of folks have a method, or better, a theme to their collections.

Only a certain company, or only certain patterns.

In the customs world, it's a little easier for the collectors to define their themes.

I concentrate on slipjoints onad folksy patterns these days, but that did not stop me from paying a visit to the Spyderco outlet store and picking up a half-dozen knives.

(Elliott and Gus: Please don't issue me a folksy-violation for this--I couldn't help it. Really.)

So my collecting is haphazard at best. Perhaps I should just call myself an accumulator.

Oh man, nobody told me either! I

USA Schrade Old Timers,at least I try hard to focus. Any slipjoint can tempt me though,I have a drawer for my "off-brands".

I'd need Mike Robuck to write my response here, for me.
Got some nice knives though,I also, try to collect the ones I once sold

Buy what you like. You will eventually find that you like collecting certain knives. I find older Schrade knives to be my favorite. But I collect any slip-joint knives I can find(and afford).

Buy what you like the looks of: blade, handle and other aesthetics, the direction will take care of itself. All is Good in the Folksy World.

BTW: I have done that for 42+ years and I am still happy with what I have.

I do understand the drive some have to stay loyal to a maker, pattern, or even scale material, I was just never afflicted with that particular fever. If a knife is aesthetically pleasing or unique (Barry Wood's folders for example) and well made then they arouse my interest. I like variety and my accumulation (rather than collection) shows that. I have slipjoints and tacticals, traditional fixed blades and non-traditional, even a few that border on being art knives. I buy expensive knives but I will also pick up a cheapie like the Cold Steel Kuda. I enjoy bring old blades back to life as well and buy knives that have lost or damaged scales and handles (something I did a lot years ago and am starting to do again, it's fun, see my Marble Expert thread in this forum).

I suppose you could say my "method" is chaos... ;)

How did you start collecting? It started with my Daddy & Grandpa.
What do you collect? I collect what appeals to me.
Do you collect by pattern or by maker? Both.
When did you start with customs? My first custom was a knife my Daddy made well over 4 decades ago...nothing fancy, but it cut.
I gave it to a Friend last hunting season.

I wonder if the Chief is gonna believe me when I tell him I've got to go to all the way to Israel to enforce this folksy summons...Dadgum that Shaldag, I knew he was gonna get me in trouble...

Wait, what if I promise that my next 3 acquisitions will be slipjoints or traditional lockbacks?

I tell you what--
you come all the way over here to write me up, you oughtta bring over some of that collection of yours to show in person. I have some nice Ren Wax for the knives and some nice malt whisky for the collectors.

That's a heck of an offer. I can't think of two guys that I'd rather have that drink with in Eretz Yisroel than you and Neeman!

But...I'll have to give some thought to part of that offer though. I do have some Ren-Wax at home and if I drink to excess at least I don't have to worry about my wife's absconding with my collection. (She'd just roll her eyes up after a few minutes and leave 'em on the table. :p) :D;)

I may be in the minority here but I do think that I have a bit of a system,I've carried stockman knives since I was a kid so that was the beginning, mostly Case and I prefer the older ones, but I'm getting fusier about condition and the Case thing was because I'm still a Pennsylvanian at heart.I expanded the Case's to include Muskrats and Trappers, then I found out there were other companies making quality knives in PA so I've added some of those and I have come across a couple from PA companies that are long out of business.Don't tell Gus and Elliott but I have liked Kershaws since I first saw them back in the 70s or early 80s and I do have a couple, mostly fixed blades but I do carry a Scallion that I just love.Alright so maybe I don't have much of a system,if I like them,I buy them.

I tried collecting by pattern but found it too limiting. I enjoy well made knives regardless of who makes them, so collecting by maker doesn't work for me. So I buy a little bit of everything, have a bunch of knives, and enjoy them.
