Collecting versus using

Since I started acquiring pistols a few years back, I have always looked for guns that I want to use instead of collect. My recent affinity towards knives has sent me down that same path. I think that is why I have spent a lot of time on this forum looking at Beckers and reading your opinions. I recently posted that my new Bk10 will be in the safe for a while, at least until my newborn son can use it. It seems that most of you are "users" too, but I wanted to confirm that. Please share your thoughts on knife collecting vs using.

Return on investment maybe? I'm like you, I generally buy things to use them. I have purchased some things for my son that I won't use, as they are future gifts. A BK10 is a great gift idea for a son.

Yeah, I am a user. I have a few knives that don't get used for various reasons. I bought two LEBK10s. One I use, one I won't, not for awhile anyway. I have a few of my brother's and my Great Grandpa's knives that won't get used anymore. I also have a knife a buddy is letting me use his shop to make it in for my daughter someday. It'll be a bit for that one to be used, she turns 1 tomorrow.

I prefer everything to be a user; that's where the real fun happens. However, I've been accumulating faster than I've been getting out and about so I've got a mint KA-BAR Warthog and Heavy Bowie sitting in my knifebox, plus several others that have only been used once. Going to attempt to fix that this year, but durned if there aren't more knives I want.

Ive learned the hard way. I realized collecting is a dirty word for me. I causes me to become fixated on "stuff" and catch myself thinking about stuff quite a bit.

Hell, about 8 years ago I put together an entire date set of Buffalo nickels; just all the dates not any rare or 3 legged ones. I became a bit obsessive about it and caused some problems at home. So what're those nickels doing now? Sitting in a safe collecting dust. I've decided they will help buy my children's cars, college etc. I wouldn't do it again though.

That experience taught me to love my family and pay attention to them not stuff.

So all my knives are users; the bk11, BK2 the ratmandu and any future knives. I only buy knives outta of my extra job money (police can moonlight working road construction, bars etc) not family money.

Out of 350 knives there are about 100 that were purposefully collected, 250 that were accumulated or purchased for no good reason at all, and 3 others that are users.
So roughly 71% Accumulator, 28% Collector, and 1% user.

Since you asked. :D

All three of my Beckers were "Accumulated." ;)

User all the way. They are tools for me, and serve to make my experiences outdoors with my family more enjoyable and easier. I have one Case knife that I would consider a "collector" for me, because it was a gift from a friend, and I haven't really been into traditional folders.

Users here (except for a Fairbairn Sykes my son got me - It's cool and I like messing with it but I have no real use for that one... as far as you know :emot-yarr: ).

I have a lot of Spyderco knives that are collectors but every Becker I bought to be used. Now if I just had the opportunity and time away from work to actually use them it would all be good.

After stacking boxes of unused basketball sneakers that took most of my savings a few years ago, i've decided that if i have to justify the knife purchase i must use it.

I am the guy that stuff is put back for.

The first Colt 1911 I bought, was BNIB and never fired. I was made in 1976. After I put about 5,000 rounds through it, I traded it for another Colt. A Detective Special, BNIB made in 1973. I shot the hell outta that one too.

I'm a user.

I'm a user but have safe queens as well. I think everyone here has at least 1 safe queen, well except Widerstand - check out his threads about using his BK77.

Man, there's Arkanian. I thought he'd moved on to Mantis knives or something. :D

I am a collector of users, ie. i wont buy or keep a knife that i will not use. The downside is, that i often buy a knife, try it out, and decide to sell with a significant loss, because it is used.

I've been busier than a 1 legged man at an ass kicking contest. Good news is I have at least 6 trips planned for the year with the family to go out camping.
