Ok I got some down time so I'm sitting here zoning out about blades, woods, women, and beer.... So I've recently started buying more expensive knives due to the fact I no longer have many bills or wife :D but reading on the other sub forums there are a lot of people who collect. Now it's not a bad thing I just don't understand it. I know some of you guys collect here too. I'm here to ask why? I've often thought about purchasing the more rare beckers the brute, 10, thick 9 but to USE them not look at them. So what does one get out of locking a blade like that up and not letting it out to play? Just knowing you have a rare knife? Maybe I just don't get it when I told the guy I just bought a pretty rare near mint b#%*e for, he didn't like it too much! But it looks like an excellent knife to use so I want to try it out...... Well sorry for ranting just figured I could try to understand it all a bit better

Im not a collector either. However, different strokes for different folks. I dont think its something you could understand, just know its something that obviously gives that individual some sense of pleasure. Nothing wrong with that.

same people who buy fancy guns and never shoot em. to each his own. But If I buy something i will use it. If its to pretty or expensive to use....then I dont need to buy it.

but if people wanna buy safe queens...then I support that...

I have a buddy that does the gun thing and he never shoots them! He has an arsenal but that's just no fun at least to me.

Some people think they'll turn around and sell their investment for huge amounts down the road, some just need to have the best toys, shiniest toys on the block. I'm with ya on the Use it or Lose it side, but some people just need to have a hobby lol.

I dont collect, no point IMO. Just another thing that needs maintainance and space for storage.

Collecting Beckers and not using them is like dating a hot girl you never have sex with.

some folks look at it as an investment, they may not get ALOT more money in the future but its possible (look at the NIB blackjack prices ) Almost like buying gold or silver. at the least they will get what they paid more often then not, or alot more. Its like a safety deposit box with a sharp edge.

Ya I know why they do it I guess I just would rather have fun with them instead but I guess there is different versions of fun.

me too, i REALLY want a blackjack bk5. That sucker would get used like crazy. problem is they only ever surface NIB and over 3 bills.....i cant justify that again (not after i got the RBK) heres to hoping one day a user will surface and my fingers are fast enough to snag it first.

shit i use every knife i buy or it goes on the trade forums. ive got an old camillus boyscout knife with the boy scout creed on one side of the handle that probably 50 years old but ill never get rid of it cause it was my old ladys granddads.shed geld me in my sleep.

I hear ya, like the $50 RBK that got away the other day. Somebody just didn't know what they had.

People collect all kinds of crap. Satisfies some kind of urge.
I've felt that urge occasionally, but generally amn't interested. I'm with CamH on the storage and maintenance issue. By that measure I have too many knives and guns, tho knives don't take much space and I only NEED about 5 more specific firearms. No wait, 6. ;-)
If you've you've got the money/space, why not turn cash into something you like. If you collect carefully you can always turn it back into cash later.

It is in human nature to collect things. Some people collect stamps, coins, guns, bugs you name it. Life is short and money is just paper. I like knives, I have my favorites but I try and make sure they all get a little love at least here and there.

I collect one makers knives, who will remain nameless. Other than that, I use my steel. I have so many knives, its not possible to use them all at once, but I work a rotation in and all of them have been used.

I test alot of knives too, and once they are tested, the usually wind up on the shelf, and get broke out in a case of nostalgia.

I have a couple of Randall's that sit in the safe. I felt a lot better sinking my money into them then the stock market. But that's just me. :p

I like that people collect things. Just think, they are the ones that will be selling an unused_________ at some point in the future. I got a brand new_________ for $50 off the original price recently, minty fresh, and I saved money!
Sure, some blades go up in price, as time goes on, but still, someone invested their money and then stored it away for YOU to buy. It's like they are psychic, and they know what you want before you even know it, then go out of their way to get it for you.
So, my next girlfriend is with another guy right now. He hasn't had sex with her all this time, that's okay by me. He's just keeping her safe till I get my dirty little hands on her. Yes, I use the hell out of my knives.
