Does anyone know if it is legal to own an automatic (switchblade) knife in New Jersey if it is merely in a locked collection display and not carried on one's person?

Illegal. That said, if locked in a case and not visible to the public or someone entering your house ( not in plain sight), then a search warrant would be needed to find it......

Tom19176 is correct. Keep your knife collection locked up and out of sight of any visitors to your home. A safe or a large lockable steel box would be your best bet. I use a large steel Greenlee job site box (locks with two padlocks) as both a small arms locker for my knives, firearms and ammunition, as well as personal papers and petty cash that I also wish to keep secure. Greenlee and similar boxes come in different sizes. They can be had for $300 or less at Home Depot, Lowes and similar stores.

Dicks has steel rifle safes on sale now for $100 for the 10 gun ones. Best way to go. The Greenlee box is great too in fact I priced them out....lol..
